Let Them Eat Cake

I am finally getting around to posting the photo above. We had some friends over to watch the SuperBowl game on Sunday night and I have been promising to bake something so long that most had decided I had forgotten how.

I will have to admit, I almost have. The Pecan Prailine Cheesecake above, didn’t come out as pretty as I had wanted, but the flavor was not bad. In Texas, we would have had a huge spread for Super Bowl Sunday, but whether anyone believes it or not, I eat a lot less now.

Instead we had some Pizza from Popeye’s Pizza (I still think this is the best Pizza in Chiriquí), a small bowl of chips during the game and topped it off with cheesecake.

Great game, good friends to enjoy it with and full tummies. It just doesn’t get any better than this.

Tenis de Mesa de Chiriquí

A week ago, I posted an email on a table tennis club in David. Today, I was able to go take some photos. Here is the Chiriquí Tenis de Mesa.

Let me tell you that if you enjoy fooling around playing ping pong, then this is not the place for you. This is a serious Table Tennis club. If you understand and enjoy Table Tennis played as a sport, then this is the place to come.

As I mentioned in the previous post, the playing facility is located on the second floor across the street from where Banco BBVA used to be. See the previous post for a photo of the outside of the building.

The hours are 2:00 PM to 8:30 PM Monday through Saturday. You enter through the Salon as mentioned in the previous post and walk up the stairs. You will see the sign above and you will know you are in the right place.

When I entered, I was very impressed. I was greeted by Raul Miranda who explained their operations.

The prices are $1 per hour and currently there is a promotion special of $2 for the day.

The club membership rates follow: Continue reading Tenis de Mesa de Chiriquí

Table Tennis Club in David

The other day I received the following email telling me about a new table tennis club that has formed in David.

From……: raul miranda

Nuestro local esta ubicado entre calle 4 y calle 3 diagonal al banco bbva en la planta de arriba . Espero con su atenciòn esta nota saludos

Yesterday, I drove downtown to see if I could find it. I did. The following photo is a block before Parque David.

The upstairs area is where the club is located. It is across the street from where the Banco BBVA used to be. The bank has moved or has closed, I don’t know which.
Just past the red car you can see in the photo, is an entrance to a beauty salon and that is the way you go upstairs. I was there around 11 AM and apparently the club players don’t start coming until after 2:00 PM. I will try to go again next week some time and get some photos of the play area.

Locomotive “Rod Carew” Dedication

.In 1977, Rod Carew was on the cover of Time Magazine and was called Baseball’s Best Hitter. He had an outstanding baseball career and was recognized by his Country of Panama with a very special dedication. You can read about it below in an article that was sent to me by a Chiriquí Chatter reader. I found this very interesting. I hope you will as well

LOCOMOTIVE “ROD CAREW” – November 14, 2008

On November 14, 2008 The Panama Canal Railway Company dedicated Locomotive 1867 after Baseball Hall of Famer ROD CAREW and held an unveiling ceremony with distinguished guests, including his wife Mrs. Rod Carew, the Governor of the Province of Colon; the Mayor of the City of Colon, the Administrator of the Colon Free Zone and MLB baseball representatives. In addition, PCRC invited 100 little leaguers from the City of Colon, who enjoyed the train ride and later attended a private baseball clinic offered by Rod Carew.
