Bailando por los ninos

I received a request to post the following:

Please join us for “Bailando por los ninos!” (Dancing for the children), on Saturday, May 29th at 8:00 pm in the Arco Iris Building at La Feria in Boquete.

Bailando por los ninos is being co-hosted by the Club Active 20-30 (a group of entrepreneurs who raise funds to help local children) and all profits from the event will go to purchase school supplies for the children of Boquete who want to go to school, but whose parents cannot afford the necessary supplies.

The evening will include Live Music from an accomplished orchestra, a DJ spinning 50’s – 90’s music and the latest hits along with Latin music, of course. We will also have dancers from across Panama to perform Salsa, Tango, Cha-Cha, Samba, Hip-Hop, and even Cheerleaders showcasing their acrobatic stunts! Enjoy local food and a full bar which profits will also go to the cause.

This event will be a fun filled night for all of Boquete, Panamanians and foreigners alike. Tickets are $7 each and will be available at La Reina on Main Street. If you know people that would enjoy an evening of dance but can’t afford the $7, please buy tickets for them. This will help raise funds while bringing our community together.

Please spread the word and help us get Boquete involved in this fun-filled, important event.

Not the Terlingua Chili Cook Off, But Closer

I just received the following email.

Howdy Ya’all!

Dana and I are in the process of organizing a Boquete’s first (well, maybe second) chili cook off! It will be Sunday the 16th of May at Cultura’s Restaurant. There will be a prize for first place! And it is a chance to expose your expertise with chili pepper and the bean to over 150 people! We are seeking 6-12 brave (and proud) participants.

If chili is not your thing – enter the salsa/pico contest! Prizes are available for this contest too!

If you have questions please email or give me a call at 6779-0181.

Now if I only knew what and where Cultura’s Restaurant is.

Panadería Renata in Boquete

Can you say YUMMY?

I have been told that the best bakery shop in all of Panama is now open in Boquete. I tried it out on Sunday. It is called Panadería Renata. The owners are from Germany and the desserts are from heaven.

It has a nice little area inside to relax and try some of the best tasting desserts and cappuccino you will ever have tried.

Here are a few of the things that will tempt you. Not to worry, all pastries are low in calories. First is a mandarin pineapple flan cake. YUM! The person that ordered it said it was the best things she had tasted since moving to Panama. Continue reading

Mario’s Pizza in Boquete

Papa Ricco’s is gone and replaced with Mario’s Pizza. I think Papa Ricco’s real business was setting up pizza places and then selling them.

Mario’s is sort of Italy meets Philadelphia. The current menu is Pizza, Salad, and Philadelphia Cheese Steak. This is a new business and the wrinkles have not totally been worked out, but the quality is there and when people know about them, I think they will return for more.

One at out table ordered the Philadelphia Cheese Steak. It must have been good, because when I reached over to try a taste, I got a fork in the hand. (Just kidding) It will be what I try on my next visit because I love Philadelphia cheese steak.

Calling all Thespians

I received the following to post:

As has been announced, the much anticipated BCP Production Broadway Revue has been postponed until early September.   However, thanks to the creativity and talent of the membership, the vacated May dates will not leave the BCP Theater in the dark.

Under the direction of Susan Thoms and Dana Applegate, the Broadway Readers’ play Love Letters by A.R. Gurney will be presented on Thursday, May 27 and Friday, May 28 at the BCP Theater.   Curtain will be at 7:00 pm each night and will feature a tasteful collection of music, wine and hors d’oeuvres, in addition to the play itself.

Love Letters presents an emotional, life-long relationship within a fast-paced, clever, sometimes shocking and often humorous reading of excerpts from notes, cards and letters written over a 50 year period between privileged friends Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Channing Gardener, in which they share their hopes, ambitions, dreams and disappointments.

This A. R. Gurney Pulitzer Prize nominated play opened on Broadway in 1989 and over the years a variety of well known actors have played the leading roles, including Jason Robards, Colleen Dewhurst, Stockard Channing, Polly Bergen, Timothy Hutton, Kathleen Turner, Julie Harris, Christopher Reeve, Elizabeth Taylor, James Earl Jones and Lynn Redgrave.

Auditions for the two roles of Andrew and Melissa will be held on Tuesday, April 20 between 4:00 and 7:00 pm, and again on Thursday, April 22 at 12:00 noon at the BCP Theater.   For further information, contact Susan Thoms or Dana Applegate.

Hotel Ladera Inauguration Party

Last Friday night was the inauguration party for the second opening for Hotel Ladera, in Boquete. The event was to celebrate its reopening following the tremendous flood that had put it out of business.

The event was supposed to begin at 6:00 PM and I arrived about that time. A tremendous amount of work has been done to the hotel and the surrounding area since the flood that had invaded the hotel. The hotel looks spectacular.

As I entered, there was a band playing in the lobby in front of the reception desk. Continue reading

El Oasis B&B in Boquete

I was going to a function in Boquete last Friday night and I didn’t want to drive back to David late, so I made reservations in El Oasis B&B.

I paid $45 dollars plus tax and that included breakfast.

To get to El Oasis you cross the downtown Boquete bridge and turn right at the BCP. Down the road on the right is El Oasis.

Saturday morning before we checked out, we spent some time on the patio in the following photo. Continue reading
