At the end of January, I received a message from Michael that the BookMark in Dolega needed assistance.
Today I noticed that Michael had posted that the recent problem was over and the BookMark is open for business..
HERE is the BookMark’s post.If you drop into the BookMark, tell Michael that you heard that the BookMark is open on Chiriquí Chatter.
I received an email from Michael about memorial service at Las Ruinas on Tuesday January 31 in recognition of Harold DeMun (known by most as Hal of the BOOKMARK). The time will be noon.
I called it a celebration in the title, because I think Hal would have liked that better. A celebration of his life instead of mourning his death. Many have emailed me to know if anything was going to be done. Now you know.
Today I read a new post from the BookMark Blog in Dolega. What seems to be the problem with the Panama Aduana at the the Costa Rican boarder.
Act One is completed. See it HERE.
I am anxious to see what happens in Act II and III.
One comment I hear a lot is that it is so hard to find English language books in Panama. I guess it has been a while since I have posted anything about the BOOKMARK in Dolega. By far, this may be the best place in Panama to find English reading material
One of these days, I need to go to Dolega and take a new set of photos because Hal has enlarged the place and there is much more to be found there.
I did take one photo when the change was just getting started an and this one just one of the many new additions. Continue reading Don’t Forget About The Bookmark in Dolega
I just don’t like doing things half way. If I am going to do something, I want to do it as well as I can. I don’t care what it is, I just don’t care for mediocre. So when my neighbor convinced me to try my hand at bridge again, I knew I would eventually need to do a little studying.
Last week I took a trip up to Dolega to the BOOKMARK to see if I could pick up a book on bridge. I had four novels to turn in and the book I found equaled the trade-in price.
Here is the book I walked out with.

On my way back from Boquete on Tuesday, I stopped at the Bookmark in Boquete to see Hal. If you don’t know about the BOOKMARK, you must not read buy many English language books in Chiriquí. Hal has the largest selection in Chiriquí and most likely in all of Panama.
Here is a photo of one of the new areas.
If you need something to read, see Hal. If you want to know about the BOOKMARK’s history, go HERE.
Wow. Obama has already started having an effect in Chiriquí, specifically Dolega. Apparently he has inspired the Bookmark to do some housecleaning. On your way, to or from Boquete, why not stop in and help Hal get rid of some of the books and so he will have room for others.
I just noticed a new post on Hal’s BookMark site. He calls the post “Hard Times Sale“. That is just what I would expect from Hal. Always wanting to help his fellow man. In my book, the BookMark is still the best place in Chiriquí to find reading material. And the BookMark is eco friendly. After you read your books, bring them back and Hal credits 1/2 of that book’s rental price toward another book. How great is that!
If you stop in Dolega, at the Bookmark, tell Hal I said hello.
I stopped in the BookMark yesterday to visit with Hal. He is cleaning house and it is a good time to get some books. Hal still has the best book repository in Chiriquí.
I had some books to return to BookMark today, and I got to spend some time with Hal. I learned that tomorrow is a special day. Hal will celebrate having spent one more year on this Earth tomorrow. If you are in the area, stop in say, “Happy Birthday”. I will let Hal’s age remain a mystery, but it has been said that I am older than dirt, and Hal is older than me.
Hal told me that he is in need of current books. The BookMark is a good place to trade in your books, if you want to make them available to a large community of readers. I have to get busy, as I have several of Hal’s books and I need to get them read. One of them, I had Hal order for me. It was a Michael Crichton book and Crichton is one of the authors that he is running low on.
Hal has recently picked up a fair amount of books on bananas. The following photo show a few of them. If you are interested in bananas, peal off a couple.
If you have some extra time to spare, Hal has some interesting stories to hear. His experience with his bout with cancer, and using the social security health care of Panama, is really a story that should be shared. I always enjoy getting to spend some time with Hal. My life has definitely been richer for having been able to get to know him.
Happy Birthday (tomorrow) Hal.
