Vision Checkup

I have noticed over the last several months that my vision was problematic. I put off going to Optica Metro until I got back from the US.

Yesterday, I went to see Dra. Ines Chang at Optica Metro. She confirmed that things had changed and said she didn’t want to change my lenses until I saw an ophthalmologist.

Several years ago she had sent me to see Dr. Adriano Young León, who practices out of Hospital Mae Lewis. At that time he had recommended I get a study done in Panama City. That resulted in a diagnosis of dry macular degeneration in my left eye.

I told her I would rather see another doctor, if possible. While very good, Dr. Young did not speak English and that makes things a little more difficult. However, the big objection I had was that he is only here once in a while and when he is, the waiting list is several hours to get in to see him.

Dr. Ines said she had started using Dr. Miguel A. Molina, who is in Hospital Chiriqui. She called and set me up with an appointment for 3:00PM and told me to be there around 2:00PM.

A word on Dra. Ines Chang. I really like her. She is without a doubt one of the nicest and most caring eye doctors I have ever been to. She is thorough and will tell you straight if there is a problem she thinks needs to be attended to besides just adjusting your lenses.

I was also pleased with my initial visit with Dr. Miguel Molina. He also was thorough. I took a copy of the photos from my visit to Panama City in 2009. He found some cornea abnormalities and prescribed some drops he wanted me to take for two weeks and than return for another checkup.

A Smiling Way to Start My Day

This morning I had a mishap with my glasses and popped the left ear piece loose from the lens. Luckily Opticas Metro is not far from me.

I got there at 9:30 just as they were opening. Dra. Ines asked how I was. I said I am blind and showed her my glasses.

She just smiled and said she fix it. Her photo follows.

DSC00687Not only is she great with fixing and prescribing eye-ware, but her smile brightened my day.

I Can See Clearly Now

Over the past few weeks I have noticed that my glasses needed replacing. I went back to Optica Metro. Dra. Ines Chang to the rescue.

She had done my last prescription when her optical center was Vision 20/20. Since that time, she has moved to her new location under the name of Optica Metro.

I can’t tell you how nice it is to have a professional doctor that you can trust. She had diagnosed my Macular Degeneration and had sent me to a good physician to have it checked out. You may remember my trip to Panama City for the examination.

She has a reassuring manner that gives you confidence and doesn’t make you feel pressured toward new technology for the sake of added income. I still use the old fashioned bifocals and not the newer progressive lenses.

She did show me some new lenses to consider for all the time I spend at the PC, but it was done as education and not as a sales promotion. The lenses are known as Interview. I will research the lenses and give them some consideration.

If you are in need of replacement glasses, I give my full recommendation to Dra. Ines Chang. If you drop in, tell her you heard about her on Chiriqui Chatter. I have received several personal emails of thanks from individuals that have gone due to previous posts. Google Map to Optica Metro.

Opticas Metro Has Moved

Last Friday I was invited to the Re-Inauguration of Opticas Metro. The first Inauguration was when the business was known as Vision 20/20.

Vision 20/20 was its name when I first started going to Dra. Inez Chang for all of my optical needs.

Later, Vision 20/20 Merged with Opticas Metro of Panama City and gained the benefits of a much larger company.

This physical move to its new location provided the perfect opportunity for a Re-Inauguration celebration. It is now located in Plaza GERABER on Avenida Obaldia. Previously this was the location of Banco Nacional. Google Map.

Above is a photo of the Opticas Metro store front taken from in front of Panderia Ely ( a good place to stop after having your eye checkup). One of the most appreciated things about the new location, for me, is the parking and easy access. Continue reading Opticas Metro Has Moved

Optica Lopez Information

I received a request from Oscar Lopez, asking that I make my readers aware that Optica Lopez has been updating its website and is now also on Facebook.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Lopez back in 2006. and took the following photo. Mr. Lopez is on the left.

As you will see from the Optica Lopez website, there are 9 locations in Panama that they are serving including David. The Optica Lopez Facebook URL is
The Optica Lopez website is, and lists the current specials.

Vision 20/20 is now Opticas Metro

I have had a couple emails from people that have planned on going to Vision 20/20 after having read my post on the optical center. When they got there they saw a new store and were not sure if it was the same.

I stopped into the store the other day and talked to Dra. Inés. Vision 20/20 was hers and she had the opportunity to merge with a larger operation in Panama City and it offered her increased opportunity. Dra. Inés is still there and is still my optical doctor of preference in David.

They have three stores in Panama City and this store in David.

Things Are “Looking” Up

NOTE: Vision 20/20 is now Opticas Metro and it’s current location can be found in THIS post.

I finally made it into Vision 20/20 to get my prescription filled, now that I have passed Dr. Young’s eye exam and am on vitamin regimentation to slow down the macular degineration.

Dra. Ines said she wanted to check my eyes again to see if there had been any change since my last visit, where she diagnosed the macular degeneration. When she said she was going to see if there had been any change, I wasn’t expecting any, because I thought a change in such a short time would not be good news.

Surprisingly, there had been some change and my main problem eye (the left eye) has shown improvement. Now that makes my weekend!

I ordered my new glasses today and they will be ready in 6 days. I couldn’t be more happy.

As a side note, the new vitamins I am taking are Vitalux Plus by NOVARTIS. They are not cheap, costing $18.30 before the 20% jubilado discount ($14.64 after the discount), for a one month supply. After I got them, I spent some time researching similar vitamins on the Internet to see how the price compared to what was available in the US. After a little research, I decided I could not beat the price or have a better product.

Things are definitely looking up!

Vision Followup

Yesterday was my followup visit to have the results from my Panama City examination reviewed by Dr. Young.

I should mention, that you need to prepare yourself when you go for some doctor’s appointments. Dr. Young is a highly recognized doctor and when he is in David, he always has a lot of people to see. My appointment was at 4:00 PM and I got to see him at 6:50 PM. That is just the way it is.

While I was waiting, I got to talk to several people. One had come from Costa Rica to have cataract surgery on both eyes. She was extremely pleased. I think the costs depend on several factors, but her cost to have both eyes done was in the $2,500 range.

Now for the news from my appointment. I am happy to report that my form of macular degeneration is the “dry” form. That is good news. It is nice to know that I will be able to enjoy the sight of a well filled bikini for a few more years. 🙂

I am now free to return to Vision 20/20 and have my prescription filled for new glasses. I hope to do that soon. Maybe tomorrow.

Visit To INDELCO in Clinica San Fernando

My eye exam was in the Clinica San Fernando in Panama City. This is a very modern and well equipped medical facility. The actual exam was done by INDELCO (Instituto de Laser y Cirugia Ocular).

I really did not know what to expect on the eye exam. Had I known more about it, I would have prepared better. The exam was basically to take photos of both eyes at 5 minute intervals after an injection of Fluorescein. Continue reading Visit To INDELCO in Clinica San Fernando
