Cable Onda Problems – Learning More

Cable Onda came out yesterday, two days ahead of schedule. The technician did not object in replacing the modem after he watched the Internet monitor. His first replacement was a dud and he had to go to the truck to get another.

The second was a brand new, never been used modem. It is the same model I have used for several months and one that CO installs with most, if not all, of their high speed installations (above 6 Mbps). It is an ARRIS TM822G.

People with simple installations, modem direct to PC or to a PC via a switch, should never see a problem.

People with their modem connected to a router may have some problems especially if it is a Wi-Fi router providing Wi-Fi for your house.

If you don’t have a network monitor capability, you may not even know you have problems. It might just look like slow response time, inability to use streaming, or you might not even see it.

If your primarily use of the Internet is to surf or respond to email, it may be a hidden problem.

I have Two Apple Routers connected by Ethernet, with the second configured as a bridge so the I use the same Wi-Fi network all over my house and my devices just choose the stronger signal.

The configuration is as follows:

ARRIS 822G modem –> Apple AirPort Extreme -> Apple Airport Time Capsule.

With yesterday’s exchange of modems, and further tests on the routers, I can now conclude that all cables, and hardware are good and the problem must lie in the configuration of my I house network.

The technicians coming to the house or answering the help desk will probably not be able to solve the problem.

The help desk will ask you to bypass your router and connect your PC directly to their modem. That proves that from their service area to your modem, all is well. That is as far as they can solve the problem. They will likely think that the problem is with your router or wifi device.

They may tell you to disconnect the power to their modem and to remove the battery, and depending on the nature of the problem, that may solve the problem temporally. For some it may completely solve the problem.

I have reset all routers, reset the modem, powered it off for 45 minutes still have the problem. I am stumped and out of ideas.

Tomorrow, I have an Apple technician coming to the house to observe the problem. Hopefully he will be able to talk to Apple in Panama City and in the U.S. and get another approach to try to solve the problem.

I don’t believe the problem is because of Apple hardware and believe others using routers from other manufacturers, may also have problems. It would be difficult to see this if you don’t have some software monitoring the internet connection between your modem and router. Apple’s AirPort Utility does this.

If you are in Panama, running Apple devices and Apple routers connected to Cable Onda (and specifically an ARRIS 822 router), it might be worth watching the Apple AirPort utility and see if you are having intermittent internet loss.

If you have had this problem and solved it, I would like to understand your solution. If you are having a similar problem with this modem and a non-Apple router, I would like to know it.

I can’t believe I am the only one having this problem.

As a side note, Cable Onda is also returning tomorrow because I don’t have phone service today.

  1. You are not alone! Please tell the technician that I am experiencing the same issue and have the same connections as you. Find out if he can stop by my house or update me on what I should do. Thanks!

  2. Cable and Wireless has the same problem. I’m still convinced it’s both companies equipment in Panama. I was on C&W in David for two years the problem never did go away. I’m now in Boquete and Cabla Onda has the same problem. When it recycles hope you aren’t downloading important documents. It’s a pain in the ass.

  3. Hil. Maybe at one of the Chinese electronic stores. My UPS has one built in. I also have some high end surge suppressors that have coax connections.

  4. Hi,

Everything was fine since they installed the service a month ago, but 3 days ago the same problem you describe started. Connectivity comes and goes randomly.

Cableonda claims connectivity to from their modem is fine.

I have 3 apple airport stations (2 used as bridges to increase coverage). I’ve tried using different ones connected to the router but all of them have the issue. The only way I don’t see the problem is when the airport station is configured as bridge (but then I cannot bridge the others wirelessly).

Have you figured out the issue?

    Thanks.

  5. Hi Don and all,

I’m trying to help out a friend in Volcan who has the following configuration. Cable Onda co-ax comes into the house and is split with one end going to a Arris TM502G VOIP modem for phone services and the other end going into an Arris DG860 router / wifi unit for combined Internet and wifi services.

Everything works fine EXCEPT the wifi signal is fairly weak and doesn’t reach the casita (which isn’t particularly far away). I’d like to buy a new supported router / wifi unit in the US and bring it over when I visit in January. I do not want to split the wifi and router functions into two separate devices since it will just complicate the configuration for my friend (total of 3 devices including the VOIP modem).

Do you have a suggestion for a good cable modem / wifi router to replace the DG860 that will give a stronger wifi signal? Any increase in upload / download speed is a bonus. This would need, of course, to be a cable modem / wifi router that would be supported by Cable Onda in their network. I’m assuming here that I can just leave the Arris TM502G VOIP modem alone and nothing we do on the modem / wifi device will affect the telephony services.

Any advice please from you or your readers is much appreciated.

    Thanks so much, Drew

  6. I am not aware of Cable Onda allowing you to provide a modem for their Internet. If they do, it is news to me. I have the standard non wifi modem from Cable Onda *ARRIS). I don’t recommend the wifi-modems.

I am using an Apple Airport Extreme with another Airport TimeCapsul connected in bridge mode via ethernet in a remote room.

Depending on the amount of coverage you want to cover, you might want to consider the new mesh routers. These are multiple units and tend to be more expensive than a stand alone router, but give good WifI over an entire house.

I have ordered a NetGear Orbi and it is waiting for me in the US. My daughter is using it.

Currently the Mesh brands are EERO, AmpliFi, Google WiFi, Netgear Orbi, and a couple others.

My Airport Extreme has been great and combiened with another unit covers my house great, but does require ethernet connection between the multiple units. Apple had stopped production and you may be able to pick some up cheap.

Also if you can get a Google Onhub, which Google has replaced with their WiFi mesh, you might find one cheap and are rated good.

  7. Thanks very much.

So, if I understand you correctly, your recommendation would be to put the cable modem / wifi router in bridge mode and attach a dedicated wifi router with greater range than what’s build in the DG860P2 (which was installed by Cable Onda)?

I’m thinking I should be able to find a good wifi router with extended range for about $100 in the US without paying for the more expensive mesh routers.

Does this seem like it might work?

    Thanks, Drew

  8. No. Have Cable Onda provide only a modem. You provide the Router of your choice depending on what your need is. I would not use WiFi or a router from Cable Onda.

You can probably get a ONHUB router and if you want to use mesh in the future, then you can add on another of the new Google WiFi units which is compatible.

I have seen some of the Google Onhubs for below $100.

You also need to remember that WiFi will not cover as much sq footage in Panama because of the concrete block construction.

  9. Hello All,

Can someone confirm if the Actiontec Ethernet over Coax Adapter Kit for Homes without MoCA Routers can work on Cable Onda service?

Thank you in advance for your help.

    Guillermo
