BIG MTG Thursday!!! Crooks Caught in Cuesta de Piedra near Volcan

The following was posted on the Volcan Yahoo Group.

There is a meeting with the press and officials scheduled for Thursday afternoon at the Cancha( the big cover) in Cuesta De Piedra. 12 km below Volcan.

Please show up and offer your support towards changing things so that the ladrones-crooks have to pay consequences for their actions.
There have been a series of robberies in Cuesta de Piedra lately. ( among many other neighborhoods in Panama)

A few days ago another was in the process when it was foiled by the owner’s workers. Several of the community responded quickly and were able to catch one of the robbers who ran on foot and was subdued. 3 others fled in a vehicle and escaped even though a neighbor parked his car across the road. The fleeing vehicle when off road through rough terrain and back onto the road and fled.

The police DIJ responded in force and later in the evening, again with the tip of a neighbor, caught the other 3.

The recently formed neighborhood watch group is working and producing results despite all the naysayers.

After a couple days the alleged criminals were released. The case, however, continues to stay open.

The alleged criminals returned to Cuesta de Piedra last night and again the Police and DIJ responded to protect the victim and to look for the accused who allegedly brought a total of 8 associates with them.
Thus, a meeting has been called for Thursday afternoon with media presence and officials in order to address this grave shortfall in the laws surrounding criminals.

PEOPLE ARE SICK AND TIRED OF GETTING ROBBED OR OTHERWISE AND HAVING THE PERPS GET FREED ON TECHNICALITIES OR OTHERWISE.

PLEASE COME OUT AND SUPPORT THIS MEETING AND HERE INFORMATION DIRECTLY ON HOW THE SYSTEM NEEDS TO BE CHANGED. THIS IS NOT A DEMONSTRATION BUT RATHER A MEETING AND YOUR ATTENDANCE IS REALLY NEEDED TO SUPPORT THE CAUSE FOR ALL OF US.

THOSE OF YOU WHO SPEAK SPANISH AND CAN BRING ANY AND ALL OF YOUR LOCAL FRIENDS AND FAMILIES, PLEASE DO SO. PLEASE COME TO ATTEND SO WE CAN ALL BE EDUCATED!!!!

ANY OF YOU WHO HAVE MEDIA CONTACTS, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO GET THEM TO THE MEETING!!! WE ARE HAVING CHAIRS BROUGHT IN, BUT, IF YOU HAVE SOME YOU CAN EASILY BRING DOWN FOR YOURSELVES PLEASE DO SO.

  1. It is obvious that nothing is going to be done about these guys. Why not publish the names and directionnes and pictures of each of these individuals so that everyone will know who they are.? Their families will be shamed into doing something maybe. Maybe somebody will recognize them from another crime about to be committed. Maybe someone will take a little vengence. They are hurting people and some are being killed. Why not give them a little notority. Make them famous.

  2. Thanks for the notice Don. I did not see anything on the local discussion forums. I am glad you have your ear to the ground and are passing along such vital information.

I have to ask the same question – why can we not get the names and possibly even the photos of these people posted? For a community that is more than fed up, I fail to understand the secrecy of who the criminals are when they are known.

  3. It’s time to demand changes in the gun laws here. Open/Concealed carry for starters. Look at all the countries who have banned weapons and what happened to their Citizens….they became targets for the bad guys and out of control governments. Make it easier to purchase weapons without government interference and bureaucratic regulations that are only make work projects for the lazy govt workers[?].

Also get a program to adopt dogs for citizens. Instead of killing them, train them to be service animals for security to the owners. Provide RFID chips for the dogs so if the owners turn them loose, they can be found out and fined heavily. Money for these programs should be taken from other wasteful/useless programs like the “drug wars” or cash from drug seizures. They could cut the number of cops leaning on their motorcycles texting their girlfriends, along the roadways.

So lets do some constructive things, b4 the year is over.

Just a few thoughts from your old Uncle Jim

  4. We agree with Ross, print pictures and names so they can be recognized. This should help prevent new robberies and/or injuries in the future.

  5. Varela needs to be forced to expedite the time period DIJ has to process our legal weapons that permits us to defend to protect us. This is ridiculous! over a year waiting.

  6. Here is the notice in Spanish for your Spanish speaking friends:

  7. My understanding of why suspects names, pictures etc. are not released is due to prejudicing a case when and if said suspects go to trial.

  8. BTW, loosening of the gun laws would likely not have made an ounce of difference in this particular robbery. In my opinion what needs to be done is to enforce the laws that already exist pertaining to juvenile detention & prosecution. It might also be helpful to track the decisions of individual judges and magistrates and to make them accountable for their actions or lack thereof.

  9. Very good point Gordo…….but yes I think gun laws do need to be loosened up here as they have been in Costa Rica in recent years to allow people/home owners to defend themselves……who if anybody is in charge of this reunion which I only after the fact found out about, and I would definately like to network with like minded folks up here in the Cuesta de Piedra/Ruta Sur/ Potreillos areas so we will be better equipped to defend ourselves against the barbarians at the gates of which unfortunately there are many……..I can be reached for now at dumluk1@hotmail.com……….Ive been plundered too many times up here and I am definately ready to do something about it…….sounds to me like the DJTA did their jobs and one more time the justice system failed………..

  10. Someone is concerned that the kids who are committing these crimes could not get a fair trial if you published pictures and names of the criminals. Since NONE of them are being even held for a day in jail, there is no trial and no punishment. I am not suggesting catching criminals and putting them in jail. That is not working. The police are doing their best. I am advocating a little old fashioned justice. If someone stabbed or shot my loved one, I would want to get even. I applaud the police officer who took a kid and started spanking the kid right there in front of God and everybody.

  11. “I think gun laws do need to be loosened up here as they have been in Costa Rica in recent years”

Panamanian authorities in Rio Sereno have appealed to their Costa Rican counterparts to tighten up.

  12. If they were more easily obtained legally then there wouldnt be much need for empresarios in Costa Rica to sell them illegally would there? Point is that now Ticos can defend themselves again, and they are, and bad guys are either more likely to get shot or go to jail which in the old daze didnt happen much…….once again, is there anybody in charge of this reunion/organization? I would like to know details…….who to contact? Who is ready to help? Who were these theives? How old are they? Where are they from? I wanna know who they are?

  13. Actually I looked deeper into the matter and met some of the people involved in Cuesta de Piedra and came away feeling somewhat more positive about the situation…….The police DID do their job, and the locals, gringos and Panas alike all pitched in, and they caught the little bastards, and the damaged car has been confiscated, and a court case is pending and the police captain says its a slam dunk, cuz they were caught in the act…….One was a minor, the rest adults……..they will go down…….the minor was caught on foot running away and was subjected to some tuff love……..hopefully he got the msg………this new ley acusatoria is a problem tho……..they had to let them go for the interim……

  14. If you can post photos of perpetrators to Chiriqui news twitter accounts they would get circulated. But let’s face it, expats can’t be activists. It isn’t just expats being targeted either, I know just as many Panamanians that have been robbed, probably more. This isn’t Flagstaff, Arizona so we have to accept that. Each has to take their own measures to protect themselves. Firearms aren’t the answer. Firearms can be more of a risk for people and can give a false sense of security. I’ve been taught if you have a fire arm and if you point it at someone, you’d better be damn ready to pull the trigger and accept the consequences. I would recommend a couple of big dogs and fenced yard over firearm.

  15. Those of us who are non-native of the U.S.A now know that we will never convince gun activists that they are a bad idea, so I ask this of you. When speaking of such things to do so using the past not present tense. Do not state that you have or will use to . . . Although I’m not a statistics guy I would say that most of us don’t have firearms in the house in Panama, but in the event of a break in how do we convince a perpetrator that we don’t? What are they going to do to us to try to make us tell them where something is that we don’t have! Please be smart in your online conversations.
I was just in Ning in the for sale section noticed someone was selling a gun case. There was a picture of the item which was full of rifles accompanied by a phone number and all the other personal information that can be obtained online via the profile. All it takes is a phone call to make an appointment and walk straight through the door. It could well be that the picture was an old one taken in the U.S. but it sends a message that this is what is in this household.
We must be smart and before posting online and ask ourselves if what we are posting could jeopardize either ourselves or others.

  16. So far I don’t think the criminals are using online information to choose targets but you never know, it isn’t good to post too much information. They might get more sophisticated.

You have to think and plan ahead what you would do if you want to defend yourself with a firearm. Are you going to let someone wrestled the gun away from you, or would you rather pull the trigger and be standing in your yard with a dead 15 year old laying there? There is no second amendment, U.S. gun control debate is really irrelevant.

    Be safe!

  17. That’s not a enough …. Crime and criminal are walking the same streets and working in your neighborhood.

THE POLICE DO NOTHING … **Driving around and hanging out on a street is nothing!

I have two criminal cases … Filed Months ago … Nothing has been done .. NOTHING.. No investigation .. no arrest …

I won .. $50,400.00 in a civil case Superior Court and the Fat PUCK .. Franklin Morales has not paid a Fxxking dime … but he has a business and a criminal Felony record but the dumb ass in Boquete want to support a piece of garage like that.
