I try to stay in touch with reality but lately it won’t return my calls.

2012 Olympics Opening Ceremonies

If you did not watch the opening ceremonies of the 2012 Olympics, you missed a tremendous ceremony. I believe I enjoyed it more than any I can remember. They really put on a great show.

They had James Bond escort the Queen in the Palace. They had Mr. Bean playing in the orchestra (what a riot he was). They had music across the years. And of course, they had the competitors marching into the stadium.

Muhammad Ali was even there. How special was that.

I couldn’t help but think, as I watched all the young athletes march in, that there are a lot of beautiful people in the world. All had bright smiling faces, bright sparkling eyes, and the hopes of each of their countries on their shoulders.

The raising of the Olympic flag was accompanied with music that would sooth a tortured sole.

Then there was the ceremony of the Olympic torch, which was carried into the stadium. It was used to light flames for each of the countries. Truly beautiful. Then the fireworks were amazing.

Sir Paul McCartney sang Hey Jude. There was something for everyone in the opening ceremony. I am glad I didn’t miss it.

I took a couple photos while I watched the TV. Of course for Lilliam, I had to take the following photo of Costa Rica’s participants. I took the photos with the iPhone, so the quality isn’t great.

Of course I had to get Panama’s Irving Saladino, and President Martinelli.

Let the games begin!

Disfrutas Panama

If you haven’t been in downtown David for a while, there is a new treat I want to tell you about. It is a fresh fruit beverage location called Disfrutas Panama. It has been around since March, but yesterday was the first time I knew it was there.

It is owned and operated by a young entrepreneur named Joe Morales. This isn’t just your typical fruit drink place. Joe has created his own recipes and if you want a refreshing drink that will send your taste buds wanting for more, you should stop in.

It is located on 3rd street in the block past the church in Parque Cervantes. It is on the left side of the street, across from Electronica Hong Kong. Here is a Google Map to Disfruta’s location.

Here is a photo of the store front.

Here are a couple photos of the flavor choices. As you can see, there is something for everyone. Continue reading Disfrutas Panama

My new credit card has this awesome theft protection where it just says “declined” whenever you use it.

Bad Post

For about a minute this morning, I had up a post that had a URL pointing to a site that said HSBC was pulling out of Panama. However, I learned that the source, boquete.org, had other comments saying that the rumor was false for Panama.

With that I pulled the post. As I said, my post could not have been active for more than a minute or so.

However, at least one person, accessed my post before it was pulled and wrote me an eloquently worded email notifying me that the URL goes to a site that infects PCs with malware and hoping that my PC was infected.

I had gone to the site on my iPad and saw no problem and then posted from my iPad. I have now tried the same URL on my iMac and Safari gives a warning for the site.

So why am I telling you this. Well for starters, if you are a Windows user and visited the site, which had Indonesia in the URL, you might want to check your PC for malware.

Second, if you use any PC (Apple based or Microsoft Windows based) I would suggest you install good AV and malware software. I run on Apple and still use an AV. Continue reading Bad Post

Potrerillos Public Safety Advisory

I received the following from the Potrerillos Neighborhood Watch Facilitator:

Residents of Potrerillos may have noticed a recent increase in the number of Police Check Points in our area, this is due in part to an increase in the number of accidents involving intoxicated motor vehicle operators throughout Chiriqui Provence. The Police are getting fed up and are setting up additional check points to snare them. Please be courteous and thank them for their service.

Over the week end of 14-July-12 there was a single car accident below the village of Acequia. The incident occurred when a car driven by a Panamanian man from Potrerillos Abajo lost control of his vehicle and struck a tree knocking it down. Police investigators from Dolega determined that the driver was intoxicated at the time of the wreck.

The next item of Public Safety interest, Continue reading Potrerillos Public Safety Advisory

Hypnotists reckon they can cure alcoholism merely by implanting an idea in the drinker’s head. It’s a sobering thought.

Apple Mountain Lion

Apple releases Mountain Lion today. Are you going to be one of the early adopters? I will most likely put it on my MacMini and run it until I feel comfortable that I have no problems before I put it on the iMac.

At $19.99, for all systems, it is a real bargain.

Update: I downloaded Mountain Lion. It took about 3 and 1/2 hours to down load. Before installing, I burned two DVDs and also put the install program on an external disk to prevent having to download the program again.

Assuming that the install process goes well, I will be happy to provide it to others in the area that don’t want to download it. It will be their responsibility to know if their hardware will support Mountain Lion and whether my install can be used for someone else’s Mac.

Second Update: I really intended to only install Mountain Lion on the MacMini, but it went so well and after playing with it, I decided to go ahead and install it on the iMac.

It was good that I had made DVDs as well as putting the Install Program on an external disk. For some reason, the external drive had a bad copy and I could not use it on the iMac. I used one of the DVDs and the install went without a hitch.

Following the install, several programs had to be updated. For me, it was iPhoto, iMovie, and Pages.

All systems are now on Mountain Lion and all are functioning as advertised.

If women really want to be treated as equals, they need to stop being so much smarter than men.

Human Emotions

I may be the only one in Panama that has faithfully followed The Bachelorette this season. These reality shows are really a study in human emotions and human interactions. What are the odds that two people can actually find true love by being introduced by the medium of TV.

I have watched a couple of these Bachelor and Bachelorette seasons. The one I just watched is the first that I fell really put two people together that have a good future in front of them.

Life is intended to be enjoyed. I really think it is much better when you can share it with someone that is interested in taking the journey with you. How a person finds their perfect solemate is one of those strange mysteries of life. For many it never happens in an entire lifetime. Life seems to contain more tragedies than joys.

Those that find love need to do what ever it takes to keep it. We only pass this way once and it is better to live life with as few regrets as is possible. I have had a few lemons occur in my life. Luckily some lemons can wind up producing sweet lemonade.
