Thieves have been exceptionally busy in Potrerillos this month. Another dangerous home invasion occurred including an incident where the perpetrator was apprehend while attempting to unlawfully enter the private property of a well respected American business owner who operates a K-9 service.  Also a theft reports involving an American in the parking lot of El Terronal Mall,  plus stolen property has been recovered.

New Case:

On the night of 28-December-2011 @ 9:10-PM,  an unknown individual described as a Panamanian male attempted to unlawfully enter the property of a North American Business owner, the same women who is experiencing harassment from another suspect. (the names have been deleted for privacy)

“just called the police. A guy just came to my gate and wanted in. I couldn’t understand everything he said but he was asking to come in to sleep. I told him no and then he asked for a drink. I told him to go away and that I was calling the Police. They are suppose to be on their way.

It might be nothing but at this time of night I got a really bad feeling.”
—Second communication—

“They already caught the guy before they even got to the house. He was an escapee from some drug detention place or something? I guess they were looking for him before I called.

Great response time. Five minutes. Super nice. I’m very happy.

My fear was the guy would try to come over my fence. I don’t need my dogs eating anyone. I figured the guy was on drugs to even ask to come in to the property with the dogs. I will sleep much better now”

Next New Case:

On or about the date of 23-December-2011 the home of a Panamanian family located in Potrerillos Abajo was invaded by 3 individuals who stole many items personal property while the home owners were home.  The incident occurred when unknown individuals quietly removed several pieces of the glass panels of a traditional louvered window from a bedroom located on the back side of the residence.  The thieves entered the residence and ransacked several areas of the home taking a large flat screen TV from off the wall in addition to several other items of personal property intended to be Christ Mass gifts and were wrapped up, this according to Police Officials from Dolega.

Information provided suggests that the home owners were in another part of the house and were unaware of the intruders in their home.   Additional information gather also reviled that the victims lost several chickens in the raid.

Police Officials were notified who responded to the victim’s home to investigate however the home owners refused to provide a statement and declined to denounce the burglary.    No further law enforcement action can be taken as the victims have decided not to cooperate.

Next New Case:

This time in David at the El Terronal Mall where Rays and Do It Center are located.   On 22-December-2011 there were two separate incidents of theft from vehicles that were unattended in the south parking lot of the mall when one of the automobiles owned by a Panamanian was broke into by unknown individuals who ripped the stereo equipment out of the vehicle,  this according to Mall Security.

In another incident that same day a pickup truck owned by American man who calls Boquete his home had merchandise stolen from the back of his truck.  The incident occurred when the vehicle owner purchased a brand new portable air conditioning unit from Lumi Center and placed it in the back of his truck.   The American man then proceeded to continue shopping leaving the item unattended in his truck located in the south parking lot.  When the owner returned he discovered that his newly purchased A/C had vanished,  this according to Mall Security.  Lumi Center employees also indicated that the lost A/C unit was valued over $300.

This is a case where the victim failed to take reasonable precautions to safeguard his property.  In all likelihood the North American man may have subscribed to a mind set that he was still in the USA and crime always happen to somebody ells. (my speculation)

A Death of a North American to Report:

On the approximate date of 21-December-2011 an American tourist suffered a cardiac arrest and died in Potrerillos Abajo.   Information provided indicates that the victim a man in his mid seventies from the USA was visiting relatives when he suddenly collapsed at or near the Zapadora antiques wearhouse.

According to the Dolega Fire Department the 911 EMS Ambulance Service responded but was unable to resuscitate the man. Individuals from the Dolega PD were also on hand to facilitate the removal of the body.

It should be noted that the Potrerillos Neighborhood Watch Group Facilitator has a portable Automated External Defibrillator also know as an “AED” on hand and can in most cases respond quicker to locations in Potrerillos that can the Dolega Fire/EMS responders who have a 15 minute response time.

If you are a resident of Potrerillos and you or a member of your family is at risk for cardiac arrest you are encouraged to coordinate in advance with the Neighborhood Watch Group and the Dolega EMS,  this could greatly increase the chances of survival in the event of a heart attack or medical emergency.

Some Good News:

The Dolega Police Department has recovered a stolen Lap Top Computer believed to belong to a North American.  If you were the victim of a recent theft and lost a lap top computer, you might be the owner of this equipment.   Contact the Dolega PD for further information on how to recover this property @ 776-0160.

Also the National Police in Chiriqui is conducting a feasibility study to determine if there is sufficient infrastructure to accommodate the installation of a new CCT camera system throughout the Province including David, Boquete and the new 4 lane road to Boquete. There is also talk about installing a set of cameras at the intersection between Potrerillos Arriba and Potrerillos Abajo where the Police Substation is located.   Panama City has a growing system of cameras similar to those surveillance systems found in the UK and the National Police believe that this type of technology could enhance their effectiveness here.

  1. I have written about this before but it needs to be stated often…
How do you go about proving that something that’s been stolen is YOURS?
Write down all the serial numbers of your computers, cameras, stereo, t.v., etc. Then send the information to YOURSELF in an email. That way, if you ever need to, you can retrieve the information from any computer, anywhere, that has access to the internet.

You should also scan your passport, driver’s license, Pensionado carnet and other important documents and email that information to yourself as well.

And don’t forget to update the information every time you buy a new, high-ticket item.

  2. Yes, I am the person who had the issue with the gentleman coming to my gate the other night. I don’t really appreciate our Potrerillos Neighborhood Watch Facilitator re-posting my private emails to him.
“Thieves have been exceptionally busy in Potrerillos this month. Another dangerous home invasion occurred including an incident where the perpetrator was apprehend while attempting to unlawfully enter the private property of a well respected American business owner who operates a K-9 service.”
There was NO home invasion. The person in question approached my fence at 8:45 pm and asked if he could come in and sleep. When I responded no, he then asked if he could come in and get a drink. At that point, because of the time of night and because he was asking these things while a Doberman was daring him to come in inside the gate, I became very suspicious and contacted the Police. Yes, they did an excellent job of apprehending the suspect and all is well.
I never felt threatened or felt like my life was in danger. I was more concerned about the suspects safety if he happened to climb my fence to get in.

  3. Sorry if there is any misunderstanding but the information regarding the “home invasions” is not related to your unfortunate incident in which an individual approached you gated property.
