Cerro Punta/Volcan December Town Hall Meeting Canceled

*TOWN MEETING NOTICE** *

The Cerro Punta/Volcan Town Meeting will be *CANCELLED*** for December.

The scheduled date for the December Town Meeting, December 8, is the same date as the Mother’s Day holiday in Panama. Mother’s Day is purportedly the second most observed holiday in Panama. Town Meeting believes that it would be better to cancel our normally scheduled meeting in order that others can observe this day safely and avoid any extra travel due to this observance.

Our next meeting is thus scheduled for January 12, 2011 at our venue, Restaurante Polineth (Paul’s) in Volcan. The meeting will begin at 10:00 AM with discussion following the presentation. For your calendar, Town Meetings are always held on the second Wednesday of the month.

For this scheduled meeting, we will discuss the recently passed *Tax Treaty and Agreement *between Panama and the United States. This tax treaty is one of the most important changes made in Panama in the past several years. It effectively ends the era of privacy in banking and asset holding for U.S. citizens in Panama which may very well lead to capital flight to other countries. Conversely, Panama leaders, eager to put a more positive spin on this Treaty, state that it will bring more capital investment into the country despite their loss of sovereignty of their banking system. We will again, invite an IRS agent from the U.S. Embassy, to discuss the new tax treaty.

Consequently, among other *News Topics* is the announcement that the U. S. Government has begun initial control of the Internet.

The Department of Homeland Security has already seized over 75 internet websites without Fifth Amendment *due process or proper trial*. The web domains were simply seized for “copyright violations,” and a posted Department of Justice logo placed on the closed web site.

With a broad application of regulatory language regarding “copyright violations,” any website could be eventually be targeted as government powers are further expanded to include other “infractions.”

We will discuss further details of this and other current *News Topics**. * ** Town Meeting wishes to take this opportunity to wish everyone a pleasant and blessed Holiday Season and a safe, healthy and prosperous 2011 New Year.

  1. This is a good time not to be an american in Panama with money or large assets. The IRS should stay at home and take care of there own problems and let the people that left the country alone with their money.

  2. Hi Don Ray,

One note for those who have not been in Panama on Mother’s Day, there will be religious processions in just about every town and they will be in the middle of the roadways. If anyone plans on traveling by car, expect even more delays than usual and use extra care.

  3. The US is also applying rules & regulations to other Countries — not only Panama. They don’t take care of their own problems, pressure and add to other Countries. I have not read any comments from President Martinelli on the advantage or disadvantage of signing this Trade Agreement.

  4. Hmmm….. You got me thinking about the spelling of “canceled,” or “cancelled.”

    Both are correct spellings.

“Canceled” is the version in American English.

“Cancelled” is the version in British English.

The dictionary lists both as correct. I guess it is all about preference.

Thanks for getting my thinking cap on.
