Subject:    Half-day closing of U.S. Embassy on December 24, 2009

Dear Wardens:  Please disseminate this message to U.S. citizens in your area.  Thank you.

The U.S. President has issued an Executive Order excusing executive branch employees from duty for the last half of the scheduled workday on Christmas Eve, Thursday, December 24, 2009, except those who, in the judgment of the head of the agency, cannot be excused for reasons of national security, defense, or other essential public need.

Please note that the American Citizen Services, Federal Benefits and Visas Units will close at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 24 and will not reopen until Monday, December 28 at 8:00 a.m.   In the event of an emergency involving a U.S. Citizen, an American Duty Officer can be reached by calling 207-7000.

For the latest security information, Americans traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department’s Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov where the current Travel Warnings and Public Announcements, including the Worldwide Caution Public Announcement, can be found.

Up-to-date information on safety and security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the U.S., or for callers outside the U.S. and Canada, a regular toll-line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).

  1. Oh, the comments I could generate using terms like “U.S. President”, “executive order” and “half-workday”, but in the spirit of the season I’ll just say…Merry Christmas!

    P.S. I am really looking forward to FREE government healthcare. It might just be enough to make me move back to the States. Who ever said you can’t get something for nothing? FREE is cool! Work sucks! Got anything else for FREE?
