Yes We Need Some Bananas

Posted by Don Ray on Nov 12 2009 at 09:07 am

On this mornings walk, we stopped by a local vegetable market and bought some bananas. The cost was 16 for $1.00. I think in a smaller quantity, they are 2 for 15 cents.

    Hi Don Ray,
One of the BEST things about being in Panama HAS to be the markets! Absolutely fresh fruits and veggies have a taste that can’t be matched by anything that comes from a package. Even the produce we get from the store shelves here is days old and has been “well traveled”. haha

    Interesting table too?!

That’s awesome. I can’t wait till I can pluck fresh fruits and veggies off the street for the day’s meals! This blog is terrific — I love the way you see the wonders of the seemingly smallest things, like this (which is proof that you’re “stopping to smell the roses”, so to speak.)

Hi J&N. This little market is in the process of remodeling and putting in new wooden shelves. They just got done changing the roof. I didn’t take any other photos because they aren’t finished. I don’t remember a table before this.

Hi dK. Thanks for taking the time to write a comment. As you can see, sometimes I just smell the bananas. ;)

Wish I was there to get a few papaya’s. They look perfectly riped…

Hi Mirethy. They did look good, but I had plenty of them from a previous day.

    Hi Don,

One of my favorite “little surprises” of living in Panama are the bananas. In the States you would have to buy them green and eat them the next day (with zero flavor). If you waited until they were yellow, let the mush begin! Here you buy them yellow, and even if they have black spots… still firm, sweet and tasty.

Two days ago I discovered the beauty of an ice cold cerveza de Panama ON ICE, IN BOTTLES. No more cans for me!

Life is good, even with the bumps in the road.

For those of us not living in Panama any more this is is torchure! How I miss the fruits, especially the guineos and naranjas. I wonder what things you do miss more from Texas and which you do not, Don Ray.

Hi Dan. Without a few bumps everyone would want to move her and that would not be good. :)

Jaime. I miss the closeness of family, TexMex Mexican food, and http://www.frys.com. Those are the biggies. I don’t miss tornadoes, cold weather and Texas traffic in Dallas.

Talk about inflation! ATwo years ago, bananas were 2 cents each, then they went up to 2 for 5 cents. After the big wind storm destroyed some of the large banana farms, they have now gone up to a whopping nickel apiece!

When I drove to Bocas, I passed a pineapple farm, they were selling small ones for 6 for a buck, medium for 3 for a buck, and large ones for 50 cents.

I get fresh cut broccoli for 30 cents a pound, filet mignon for $2.50 a pound.
