$40 just to leave……. hmmm. WELCOME to PANAMA!!

I will never understand hitting someone on the way out. If I ran a country such as Panama, I’d hand all departing parties a 5# bag of coffee & a T-SHIRT. Not a slap in the face!

Bob. You may be mistaken because we are jubillados but have never paid. Perhaps it is who is on the departure desk as seems to be normal with many other things. Maybe it is all down to facial expressions. Maybe the color of your eyes. Maybe………………………

If I am not mistaken? The price is included in your airline ticket purchase UNLESS you buy the Jubilado discounted ticket. Then you will have to pay the additional fee out of pocket.

Panama has had an exit tax for many years. It used to be $10.00. Some years ago, I can’t remember when, it was added to ticket prices, so you don’t see it. The US also has a departure tax, not to mention a bunch of other air travel taxes. See them here;

Those and other fees are why that $9.00 Spirit fare becomes $200.00. Ain’t taxation wonderful?

Both Bogota and Quito charge airport taxes. Quito, where I live, charges $42.00 per person, which makes it the highest airport tax in Latin America (a dubious distinction, to say the least…).

Hmmm, only place I’ve paid an exit tax was in Honduras and maybe Costa Rica. Never paid in Panama, unless it was in the price of the return ticket already.

We have always had to pay a departure tax of $20.00 each when exiting Tocumen International heading to the United States. I can’t remember if we had to pay that ammount when going to other countries other than the U.S.A.

The 1st time I ran into an “Exit Tax” was in 97 when I went to Belo Horizonte Brazil, and the AA ticket agent collected $20, when I checked in for my return flight.

I thought it was funny to have to pay to leave a country.
