Beginning January 1, 2010, the departure tax at Tocumen International Airport will double. Currently at $20, all those departing Tocumen will have to pay $40. Legal residents of Panama 55 yrs old or older and those with “jubilado” or “pensionado” status are entitled to a 50% discount. This new law was published in the Official Gazette on l9 October.

  1. I don’t think we have ever paid exit tax at Tocumen unless it is included in the price of the ticket which we either buy online or for better discount go directly to the Copa/Continental office in David.

  2. The 1st time I ran into an “Exit Tax” was in 97 when I went to Belo Horizonte Brazil, and the AA ticket agent collected $20, when I checked in for my return flight.

I thought it was funny to have to pay to leave a country.

  3. We have always had to pay a departure tax of $20.00 each when exiting Tocumen International heading to the United States. I can’t remember if we had to pay that ammount when going to other countries other than the U.S.A.

  4. Hmmm, only place I’ve paid an exit tax was in Honduras and maybe Costa Rica. Never paid in Panama, unless it was in the price of the return ticket already.

  5. Both Bogota and Quito charge airport taxes. Quito, where I live, charges $42.00 per person, which makes it the highest airport tax in Latin America (a dubious distinction, to say the least…).

  6. If I am not mistaken? The price is included in your airline ticket purchase UNLESS you buy the Jubilado discounted ticket. Then you will have to pay the additional fee out of pocket.

  7. Bob. You may be mistaken because we are jubillados but have never paid. Perhaps it is who is on the departure desk as seems to be normal with many other things. Maybe it is all down to facial expressions. Maybe the color of your eyes. Maybe………………………

  8. $40 just to leave……. hmmm. WELCOME to PANAMA!!

I will never understand hitting someone on the way out. If I ran a country such as Panama, I’d hand all departing parties a 5# bag of coffee & a T-SHIRT. Not a slap in the face!
