Chicos y Chicas modelos de 2009

Saturday evening I went to the Chiriquí mall to watch the modeling presentation that was being put on. I had been told that it would start around 6:00 PM. Of course, I forgot that that was Panama time and maybe I didn’t understand the correct starting time either.

This was how it looked when I arrived. As the crowd arrived, they had to bring in extra seating because they hadn’t set up enough.

Shortly after arriving the asked everyone to exit and enter though the main entrance to pay admission. It was $5 a person. I gave them a Chiriquí Chatter card and told them I was only there so I could take photos and post on the web. I guess it was a good thing I mentioned that, because they gave me a seat in the front row at the end of the runway. Lucky me!

At seven they apologized for starting late, but said it would be about another hour. The actual program got started close to 8:00 PM. By then, it was dark. They did have some spot lights illuminating the runway, but it was not sufficient to take photos without flash. My small flash didn’t do as good a job as I would have liked and I have had to discard a fair number of photos.

This was an experience for me as I have never watched a modeling session and certainly have never taken photos of one. The lighting as well as the constant movement provided challenges. I apologize to those whose photos I didn’t take well, but with Chiriquí Chatter, you get what you pay for. 🙂

The program had several sponsors and they had seats along the front of the stage. When the program began, I don’t think there were many, if any, empty seats.

In this post, I will try to give you a glimpse of the program. I started out with around 250 photos and after removing the very bad one, I am down to around 220. Some photos are better than others, but they are not to the standard I like. None the less, it will give you an idea of the event. It started at 8:00 PM and ended at 11:00 PM. I had a great time.

Another side comment before I start. It seems that many of the models had their own fan club there. When they were on the stage, hand held horns went off, people blew whistles and much cheering began. What also amazed me was that it was the male models that seemed to have the most fans there.

The first part of the program was an eco-friendly set. All of the clothes that the models wore were completely recyclable. Following are a few photos from that set.

Here is a closeup showing some detail.

Here are a couple more models.

Here is another. The closeup shows that the tabs on drink cans can be used for many things.

Each section had a final walk of all models as a group.

Next came the youth models. Here was a real cutie! Just wait till she is 18.

This one turned too fast for me.

The young ones had a final trip around the runway as a group too.

I don’t remember the theme of this set, but here are a few photos.

Ready for another group. Here they come.

Between two sets, the following young lady came out and performed a dance. I was impressed.

Here come some photos from the next set.

This set was obviously for one of the sponsors. You guess who it was.

The next skit was pretty cute. It started out with the fellow on the left talking to the girl and seeming to make some headway. Then the fellow you see coming on the right arrives and he has a Coke Zero and when he shows it to the girl she is won over and they leave together.

This is the runway trip photo the Coke set.

Here is the next set.

I think this lad had the largest number or at least the loudest fans there.

This was the runway group photo.

There was another pause and the lady that dance before did another dance. I took a video. Unfortunately she was too far away and the video is not worth posting. Note to self. Consider getting a small webcam.

Here are a few photos from the last set.

And this is the last runway photo.

I will try to post all of the photos in a separate album, but this should wet your appetite. I had no idea what to expect from the evening. As it approached 8:00 PM, I was wondering if I would be better off going and getting something to eat or waiting a while longer. I am glad I stayed. It was a most enjoyable evening. If you see any chicas or chicos that you know, tell them you saw them on Chiriquí Chatter.

  1. Hi Don Ray:

Thanks for the pictures. I still wonder who were the sponsors.
I know how unconfortable it is to be on time and then sit there “COMO UN PLÁTANO” for hours. Since the word “plátano” (plantain) , is quite similar to “plantado” ( stranded), you hear the phrase when we colloquially complain of waiting. Sure, the stress on the first syllabble allows us to emphasize our disconfort at the supra-segmental level.

A bit of advice for any evening party that includes dinner: it´s better to have a snack before leaving…

Thanks again, nice to hear that all in all you enjoyed!

  2. 1) How can I find out about events like this ahead of time, so I can plan to attend?

    2) I am a photographer, and would like to do some model photography. Do you have any idea how I might find models?

  3. I found out about this at the last minute. There are a few modeling agencies in David. There is one in Plaza Mallorca where my dentist is.
