This and That

As you may have noticed, Chiriquí Chatter has been either missing in action or with few posts for a while. Yesterday it was my web host that had problems and my best guess is that CC was down for around 12 hours. This is the price of having a low price provider, but keeping my costs down allow me to remain Ad free and with obligations to no one for what I write.

The winds took their tole in David and that cause CC to be down. Many parts of the city of David and outlying areas were without power. Some for multiple days.

We were lucky and were never without power. We didn’t have any Cable Onda and that included all Internet, TV and telephone. Cable Onda said that was because of the lose of power in this area.

We did have a strange situation and parts of the apartment didn’t have power. The same was true in the house behind us. I guess each apartment and the houses must have multiple feeds for power and one of those feeds was out.

Being without power ia a real problem for me because that means I have take cold showers. We haone shower with power for a while, but the second show had power.

Yesterday, as noted in a previous post, we went to La Barqueta. I always enjoy visiting with my friends there and yesterday the conversation rolled over to the crime issues of late.

It seems that many would like to minimize the problem, either because it is bad publicity for selling properties and tourism. However, my feeling is that people need to come to Panama with expectations that are consistent with what is going on.

According to what I heard yesterday, Las Molinas and Villa Escondido have each had their own incidents. There were supposed to have been 5 houses in Las Molinas that were hit in one night. Another frightening thing that was mentioned, was that the robbers preferred to come when people were in the house, because they could be assured of getting money then.

In some of the remote areas, such as Alanje, there seems to be thoughts that some of the problems may have been drug related. As the world economy gets worse, some increase in crime is to be expected. However, covering it up and not talking about it to keep from lowering sales is the wrong thing to do in my estimation.

I think there needs to be a greater sharing of information, so that the culprits that responsible are apprehended. Even in La Barquete, the developers don’t want any problem talked about.

I believe the crime in Chiriquí is minimal compared with Costa Rica, but if everyone ignores it and doesn’t admit that it exists and that people need to be aware to avoid becoming a victim, then it will become worse.

At any rate, that is what I think. However, I am but one voice in the wilderness.

  1. Hi Don

I do agree with you that you need to tell the truth about crime in Chiriqui. There is crime in any country and we are not exempt. When clients ask we tell them exactly that.

I couldn’t agree more. Perhaps if enough people would “tell it like it is,” it may prompt authorities to provide more severe penalties for these crimes. Theft is a crime against the ownership of personal property and should be dealt with more harshly than what the current enforcement of law exacts. John Adams, U.S. President, stated : “The moment the idea is admitted into society that property is not as sacred as the laws of God, and that there is not a force of law and public justice to protect it, anarchy and tyranny commence. If ‘Thou shalt not covet’ and ‘Thou shalt not steal’ were not commandments of Heaven, they must be made inviolable precepts in every society before it can be civilized or made free.”

Then again, if the distribution of income in Panama was more equitable and the politicians more ethical, there would be also much less justification for theft.

when i read about your place having power in one area of the house but not another, i thot that’s odd but you said you thot that there were 2 leads coming into the house and i passed it on. then i heard of several other places that had the same situation and it dawned on me that one possible answer to the situation is that houses normally have a 220 service (2 hot lines and 1 neutral line) and so in your situation, only one hot line and a neutral is making into the house so one side of your breaker panel is dead.
