One for Two
Aug 19th, 2008 by Don Ray
I was so impressed by the prices at the new Super Baru, that I decided to take a walk through the Super Baru close to Plaza El Terronal. I did confirm that many things were cheaper than what I pay at El Rey.
But the best surprise was when I found Hormal Chili in the can. Super Baru had several cans, with and without beans and some labeled as “HOT”. I have been wanting a chili dog for so long and I think I have kept my eyes open for at least 3 years and couldn’t find chili in El Rey. I was really happy.
Then for my second surprise, I saw Almond Joy at the checkout counter. I love Almond Joys. I bought two.
Since Almond Joys have two pieces, I shared. Unfortunately, the candy must have been old and melted and I don’t know how long on the shelf. None the less, both pieces were eaten. That resulted in two people having diarrhea last night. Luckily it passed and everyone was well this morning.
I just took out the second bar to check it out. You can see from the following photo, it looks suspect.

Here is a photo of the coconut center. You can see that it is brown and not white. I tossed this bar in the trash. One night of diarrhea is enough for me.

If you see an Almond Joy in Super Baru, I recommend you opening it before you pay for it. One thing that happens, all to often, is getting bad candy bars and ice cream that has melted and been refrozen. This happens in many of the stores. The last US brand of ice cream I bought in El Rey was icy.
Plan on throwing out some number of these. I can’t stop buying some of them, but I only eat them, if they are good. Well, with the exception of last night.
I still am happy about having one good surprise out of two possibilities.

Don, Iam sorry your expectations were let down. Hopefully, you will be able to find them somewhere else.
I think I will pass for a while. Wait, that didn’t come out right.
Very punny…
Finding Chili in Panamanian markets has always been a hit or miss proposition. Before my reflux problem became serious, I used to make my own. I used a very basic recipe, and the chili was quite good. Since finding chili powder is also a hit or miss deal, I also mixed my own. Equal parts of oregano and cayenne pepper. Start with a pound of whatever meat you want to use, and if it’s not ground, cut it into small cubes, but for chili dogs, you should use ground. Brown the meat, and season with salt, garlic, etc to your taste. Stir in the chili powder until you are satisfied with the color and taste. Simmer until done.
There are lots of recipes to be found with a Google search. Remember, real chili does not have beans or tomatoes.

I have yet to find Mounds….you know, sometimes you feel like a nut and other time you are not.
Henry, I have made my own chili and it is ok, but it is usually more than I want. A can of Hormal is just right. It is not too hot and was perfect on my hotdogs.
John, I haven’t seen mounds, but if they are in Panama, they are probably in Panama City.
