Linux On Display (Soon)
Aug 8th, 2008 by Don Ray
I have a couple activities scheduled for next week. First, Dario is having a final examination for his students and this will complete the series of three readings/translations with his class. I need to find a suitable topic to read for the class.
Second, I have a local store that has committed to put up a Linux display. The owner said he has had many people that were dissatisfied with Microsoft because it was too easy to get viruses and they spent too much time on that and too little getting to use the PC.
I have configured a PC for him that has the ability to demonstrate Linux in both English and Spanish. The KDE desktop makes it easy to have both configurations running in the same PC at the same time. I also included the Gnome desktop, which will show the difference in looks between Gnome and KDE.
I had completed this the installation before I went to PC. When I returned, the store owner said he would like me to enable a wireless connection, so that he could connect it to the stores Internet. It took me about four hours to figure what to install and test it on my own wireless environment.
The next step is to take it to the store and configure it for his wireless router. When I have that done, I will take some photos and tell you where you can go to see Linux running in David. I truly believe that Linux on a PC will satisfy many people’s needs and removing the worry of viruses will be a big drawing card.
If there are is enough interest, I will schedule some time to be in the store and give demonstrations and answer questions. There has been a large conference (Linux World) going on in the US for the last week. IBM was one of the speakers forecasting big things for Linux and IBM has been throwing its weight behind it.
If you have any interest, let know. I have DVDs for openSUSE which is the distribution of Linux I am running. I also have CD’s of UBUNTU 8.04, KBUNTU 8.04, Linux Mint 5 (Elyssa), Mandriva Spring 2008, and am downloading Fedora 9.0 DVD.
I am willing to help anyone that is interested in getting a running Linux system going. When the demo location is set up, come by and see it and I think you will be impressed. If not, you will at least know what Linux is all about.

Don,
My wife and I are considering a Linux box. Would you be willing to have an E-mail conversation about it with us? In English vs. the computer-speak that everyone else we know uses?
If so, just use the E-mail address I signed on with.
Thanks,
Dave
Hi Dave,
I have responded to your email address. I will be happy to try to assist you.
