Hmm, never thought about a mixer! We have a small hand mixer. Chances of getting a standard one in David are probably much higher than getting a bread mixer.

Great idea! And we'll check out Mari Pan as well. We go by IDAAN all the time.

One that I like for cakes is Mari Pan and is on the street that runs by IDAAN. I have only bought cakes there and it has been a while since I have been there.

I also stop in Ely once in a while. They are about as good as it gets in David.

For making bread, I stick with my mixer to kneed the bread and then just toss it in the oven. I haven't done that for a while either. I have had a few people complaining that I have gotten lazy and am not baking enough. They are probably right.

Don, if you would be so kind as to pass on the names, I'd be grateful. I don't want to imply that we've made any extensive search of David bakeries--we haven't--so I'm hoping that you know of ones that we never saw or heard about.

We're about agreed that we're going to get a bread machine--we just haven't figure out how or when. I want to look at a couple of stores in David such as Arrocha and see if they have bread machines before we go through the headache of getting one here from the States. Do you know of a place we can buy one?

I've been reluctant to do this, simply because I have enough to do as it is and am not thrilled at taking on one more chore. But as the heavy work decreases, I'm more open to it.

Hi Joyce. I have to agree with you. For the most part, bakeries here are nothing to rave about. I have been to a very good one in panama City, but I don't remember the name. There are only about two that I consider "ok" in David. All of the others are marginal. You just have to get used to what is available or make your own.

For the most part, with very few exceptions, I have found the bakeries in Panamá to be really bad. There's an adequate one in Boquete, but it isn't, by my standards, anything special.

I'll be really waiting for your report, Don, on any good ones in David. We've about given up on bread from any source, because after even about 24 hours, it develops an off-taste. I don't know how much truth there is to it, but we were told when we first came here that bakeries in the area use lard instead of oil in their goods. It does make sense, given the meat industry here. If so, that would account for the off-taste.

And before talking about Latin America as a whole, I would except Brasil. Even at the airports, the baked goods are better than almost anywhere else I've been, including most places I know of in the US. The breads and rolls are out of this world.
