Windows XP SP3

I decided to install XP SP3 update today. It went on without a hitch. It has been some time since I have booted up windows and I had forgotten how long it takes to boot. While I had Windows up, I also updated all other software to the latest version.
With that task being complete, I am now back on Linux. Sometimes it is good to visit old friends, but it is always good to return home to familiar surroundings.
I consider XP an old friend. We spent so much time together. Now that MS has finally gotten XP to the point where it is basically a very good system, they are going to put it out to pasture.
I doubt seriously that Windows Vista will ever come up to the level that XP has finally reached. Better luck to MS the next time. In the meantime, Linux continues to move forward. With each step it moves more and more into the desktop arena.
I worked with Vista for almost a year before finally giving up on it and returning to XP. To make a long story short the OS was simply not compatible with much of my software, including my Microsoft’s, and each day would bring about another problems, especially if you I downloaded the latest “up date”.
Bottom line it was indeed nice to return to my old friend XP.

Hi Jack, I always thought XP was ok. Since I have a legitimate copy running, I keep it available. Now that UBUNTU can provide me with everything I need, I rarely bring up XP.
It has simplified my life a lot to not have to spend any time with AntiVirus updates or SpyWare updates.
The OS keeps itself up todate. I had been at the point where I thought I might move to Apple’s OSX, but after using UBUNTU, I am not inclined to spend the money on the hardware required to run it. Now if they ever decided to offer OSX as a product for regular PCs, then I might buy it. However, Jobs is about as greedy as Gates.
I guess I’ve been using Linux too long. XP drives me bat-sxxx nuts with all the nagging I experience every time I boot it up. It usually takes about 5~10 minutes just to get to a state where I can work. It nags me about unused desktop icons. It nags me about updates and if I tell it to shut up and let me decide when to install them, then it installs them without permission when I shut down. It nags about anti-virus updates. I’m sure there are ways to stop the nagging, but when I only use XP a couple of times a month, it hardly seems worth the effort to figure out how to civilize it. Damned if I can understand why people put up with this.
Don’t even get me started about Vista.

Vista is truly dire. It should never have been released.
I didn’t want the beast when I bought a new machine last summer (my first laptop). But I had no choice (well not at any of my two local pc stores). I persevered with the monster for 3 months or so. I ended up taking it off and *upgrading* to my old favourite, windows xp.
The only light on this dark cloud, is that vista will hopefully be the shot in the arm that the linux community need. And I hope big business and governments across the world also start to see the real need to have more competition in the operating system market place. The EU has certainly been swinging haymakers at MS in the last few years….and has given it a few bloody noses. More governments need to take a stand.
