Where do you want to eat today?
Mar 17th, 2008 by Don Ray
Going out to eat yesterday, went something like this.
“Where do you want to eat today?”
“I don’t know. Where do you want to eat?’
…
“What kind of food do you want today?”
“I don’t know. What kind of food do you want today?”
…
“Is there any kind of food that you do not want to eat today?
“No, what ever you think sounds good, will be fine with me.”
…
…
…
“Didn’t David say that Renegado was going to have Cannelloni?”
“I think so. Do you want Cannelloni?”
…
“Why don’t you call and ask if it is on the menu today?”
“Okay. Do you know the number?”
“Hmmmmmm. I think it was on one of the menus I posted,”
…
Sure enough it was, but with my old eyes, it wasn’t easy to read the number (774-5977). I had to go back to the original photo and enlarge it. Now you have the number, if you need to call.
We called and asked if they had Cannelloni. They said they could have it ready by the time we got there. Ok, We will take Cannelloni for two and a different plate will be ordered when we get there.
When We got there, David recommended that the third in our party (Natalie), try a new corvina platter, cooked Mediterranean style.
The Cannelloni came out first, since we had ordered it ahead. When the serving platter came, I could sense my salivary glands kick into action. I could smell the toasted cheese on the top, but I forced myself to relax and just admire it for a while.

Enough is enough. Lets have a little. Surely, I have had Cannelloni before, but I don’t remember having anything that tasted as good as this. The sauce was nothing less than outstanding. I could not have been happier with my selection.

Here is a photo of the Mediterranean corvina dish. Natalie described the flavors, in this plate, as very exotic. It came with the potatoes I like and at the top of the plate was the center of an eggplant between two pieces of pepper. It also had a couple onions that Natalie raved about. I think the sauce on the fish was a remoulade sauce. What ever the sauce was, it was very good.

I keep going back to Renegado, because David and Berta keep the quality high and give me flavors from Spain and Peru.
Yesterday was Berta’s birthday. Happy birthday Berta. Thanks for letting us share part of your birthday.
I almost forgot. When they opened Renegado, they were open 7 days a week. They are now taking Mondays off for themselves, so stop by on any other day. When you do, tell them that Chiriquí Chatter sent its regards.
Don’t forget the number above, in case you are interested in the Cannelloni.

omg…they need to open here in Florida
Not that we don’t have good restaurants but I miss Panamenian restaurants here ….
Yummy! both plates look very good! Too bad today is Monday, because I am really hungry with the description of the food. Your cannelloni were filled with what?
Rolando - It is very good. No comida tipica though.
Lilia - Sorry about that, but at least I saved you a trip today. The Canneloni was filled the ground meat.
Thanks for the heads up that they would be closed today. I wanted to go tonight. Your post made me even hungrier.
Think how hungry you will be tomorrow.
Don, you’re always doing this to me. We eat late — about 2000h (8 pm). But I’ve been trying to check into your blog about 1700h, which is when I take a little break with some brandy and amaretto (about 50-50), which kills off most of my aches and pains and prepares me to cook some dinner for Deborah and me. After the brandy/amaretto concoction, I start sipping about 7 ounces of burgundy, which lasts me until 2100h. Okay, now you know all my drinking habits.
The problem here is these food photos you’re always putting in front of me. I start salivating like a dog. We loved the food in Panama, BTW, and I think one of the reasons it all set so well with us was the lack of preservatives, hormones, and 5-syllable words. And the price — the price sat very well, especially out in the hinterlands.
Incidentally, here at 1200 feet in North Carolina (the elevation is important since 25 minutes from here at 4,400 feet there’s snow all over the place and spring is a month off), all the flowering trees are blooming their little hearts out. In fact, as I look out the window, I see dogwood, cherry, and pear, and it looks like winter with all the trees so covered in white blossoms.
Hope you have a great dinner and no, I don’t want to see the pictures! (Okay, yes I do.)
I always eat lite in the evening. No need to sleep with a lot in the stomach.
Just came back from lunch at Restaurante Renegado.
Of course, I had to try the Cannelloni. They were very very very good! There was a table of four that also ordered the Cannelloni and Iam sure they enjoyed it as much as I did. A friend ordered the corvina en salsa verde and it received two thumbs up. We also had the ceviche peruano and the croquetas de pollo. Everything was delicious. I told Bertha that we were there because of your posting.
Thanks for letting us know of another excellent place to go out and eat.
Hi lilia. I am happy you enjoyed it. I always do. David and Berta are nice folks too. They make a difference. The food is great too.
I know why your picture shows only your head. You can’t be eating all the temping food you show us without gaining a bunch. All looks fantastic. Yummmmmm
Beda, you have figured out my secret.
Don: We finally got to Renegado yesterday. It was all you said it would be and more. We had a great meal: corvina ceviche, Peruvian style; osso bucco, with traditional marrow; corvina with seafood salsa, and terrific papas fritas. All were excellently prepared and plated. I even got Bertha to kick up my ceviche a notch with some picante spices from Peru! We look forward to duck, canneloni, and lamb……mmmmm. The best part about the wonderful cuisine are the wonderful owners. I’d just go back and drink icy cold cerveza just to chat with them. Thanks to David and Bertha for providing us with a terrific lunchtime treat.
And thanks to you, Don, for steering us there!!!
Hi Wendy,
Glad you enjoyed the meal. They are good people. I always enjoy eating there.
[...] Tuesday, I was out at lunchtime and I noticed that Renegado has a new Executive Menu between noon and 3PM. It is contains a main course, bread, a drink and dessert for $8.50. I couldn’t pass up another opportunity to have the outstanding Cannelloni. [...]
AND THE BURGERS ARE THE BEST IN BOQUETE AS IS EVERYTHING ELSE I HAVE TRIED. MMMMMMMMM
Actually, I believe the best burgers are in David, but the restaurant that makes them is currently being enlarged and remodeled. It is Las Brasas.
Boquete has several good restaurants. I am not sure I would agree that they all are the best.
Hank must be talking about your article on Amigo’s in Boquete. His Comment is tacked on to one about the Renegado which, in my memory, does not serve burgers and which is, in my opinion, a class act restaurant.
Amigo’s is a friendly, burger joint where good ol grease gets an A. I’d go ‘there a lot more if they ever decided to drain before serving their papas fritas or cebollas fritas or anything else fritas. Otherwise, the food is okay.
Hi Wendy. Now that makes a little more sense. Since my post on Amigos was the only time I had been there, I have no experience with their burgers. However, I have eaten burgers in most of the other restaurants in Boquete that serves them. Don’t remember any I thought were as good as Las Brasas.
Still all people have different tastes. I guess that is a good thing ot there would be fewer restaurants.
A BIG OMG!!!…My wife (Karen) and I had lunch at Renegado today and I believe I had one of the best meals I have ever experienced on the face of this planet. I ordered the carne cannelonni and Karen had a pasta dish with bacon specially ordered by David (Owner) for her. Bertha his wife did the cooking. The beer was ice cold and David is very witty and humorous. My son is coming from Oregon next week and Restaurante Renegado will definitely be on our agenda. Thanks Don for tipping us off to one of the best restaurants in the universe!!!!Wolfgang Puck…you need to take lesson’s from Bertha …on making great cannelonni.
Berta and David are great folks. I am glad you liked it.
