A Weee Update
Mar 12th, 2008 by Don Ray

Maybe it is time for an update on my ASUS Eee PC.
It has been two weeks since I wrote about my weee purchase. It appears that it is going to do everything that I desired of it. It is small enough to fit in most women’s purses and it is light and appears to be durable.
I have taken it out with me to check on wifi locations. If I get enough to post, I will make a post. If you have run into any in David, you might let me know and I will add it to my compiled list. To this point, the only restaurant I have verified is TGI Fridays. I remember that the bowling alley had wireless, but I haven’t been back to verify it.
I was outside OTEIMA the other day and found about three wifi networks, but none were available for connection. OTEIMA’s must be set up for students and is password protected.
I am still running the XANDROS Linux OS, that came with the PC, and for the moment have no intention in changing. It works well and its simple interface is nice if I let someone, that isn’t very PC literate, use it.
I have tried connecting it to my portable 80 gig hard drive and it works fine. That gives me plenty of storage if I want to take it on longer trips.
All in all I think this is going to be a great little device.

Just love all these nerds….does everyone know what we are talking about? Guess I am the last of the really Lost Generation. Hal
I put the photo on the post. A picture speaks a thousand words - so they say.
H Doni,
Panama Bill’s has WiFi connect. And it’s no longer what was Panama Bill’s. Think some local folk bought the place. (You probably know more about this than I do, since we just pop in to David on rare occasions, at least at this point.
But, there’s now a really really nice young man who seems to be filling in as bartender. Awkward, shy, really sweet, kinda gangly skinny, and smart. His name is Darwin, if you can believe.
Don and I went to Panama Bill’s to check email, etc. two times when we were in David last January. Had remembered from our October visit that they had WiFi.
The night that we arrived last January, Don spaced out and had left his cane “somewhere”…yep he needs one…won’t go into all the reasons…let’s just say he’s the “King of Pain”.
Anyway, Don’d thought he’d left his cane in a taxi. We’d just arrived that evening from Panama City via bus, and we were really really tired. Cabbed over to Panama Bill’s, where we knew there was WiFi. Cabbed back to hotel. Don thought he’d lost his cane in the cab when he’d stumbled out back at the hotel, all punchy tired. We figured “good bye cane” and went on a strenuous search for a replacement cane.
Then two days later, just on the outside chance, we popped back in to Panama Bill’s. Darwin recognized us, and came running and waving forward. By then we’d learned the Spanish word for cane: Baston. (sp?). We thanked him profusely, then sat at the bar for a couple of cervezas as he practiced his English and me my Spanish, (and Don his poquito espanol). Don showed Darwin all of his whiz bang tech toys, including his Palm TX, and his Slovoed program, which does Engl./Spanish, or Spanish/Engl word translations. We communicated via Slovoed, and spanglish and englispang. And we all had a really nice warm time. And Don’s cane was back in his possession, thanks to Darwin.
(FYI: this was in the daytime - mid afternoon)
So, since the Gringo gypsies have moved on to who knows what new and exciting skeezy whereabouts, and the place is rather quiet now, and Darwin’s a sweetheart, you might risk a WiFi sitdown. Haven’t tried their food. Looks to be “tipica”
(of course, could have turned over again, as that’s the way the restaurant business “turns”.)
Warning, it’s really slow there. (Even during our first drop in on the evening Don lost his cane). It was so slow that one poor staff member was practicing his Karaoke in the “open” area, “veranda”, of the place. Pretty lonely looking, and desparately off key. But he was wailing his heart out, trying to belt out the tunes. One way to keep from being totally bored. Fortunately his catterwalling was only mutely heard through the heavy glass doors leading to the inside of the restaurant. K. That’s all I got. Always got a story attached, don’t I.
Best, Charloe (Charlotte)
Hi Charlote,
I haven’t been to Panama Bolls in a long time. I will put it on my list to try wifi.
Hi Don, after reading your post on the bowling alley having wifi, my wife went there and I was able to use the wifi on my Nokia. That was back in January. So I am sure it is still there.
Hi mike. Thanks for the feedback.
JAJAJA, my cell phone has a bigger screen than that thing, Don.
You must carry around a large cell phone.
Hi Don,
Thanks so much for posting the information on the ASUS. I read your post, went and did some research and ordered one for my sweet, but technically challenged husband. He’s getting pretty wired though.. He has an IPod, now the ASUS and a digital camera. We’re moving south later this year, he ahead of me. He needed a good little laptop for email, surfing, and Skype and boy this fit the bill and was a great buy! I bought it on Amazon and ordered an 8Gb flash card which worked like a charm. I was considering a referbed Mac but this was even better. Great Blog! We check in almost daily. Cheers, Alice Poh
Hi Alice. I hope he likes it. I like mine a lot. Being Linux I don’t have to worry about viruses. It is small enough to tote on a trip and does everything I need.
Also thanks for the nice comment about the blog.
