Let’s Practice a Little English
Jan 17th, 2008 by Don Ray
Darío Quiroz asked if I could spend a little time with another of his English classes. This is something I always enjoy, so of course I agreed.
His students aged from 12 to adult. We had a lively conversation, with them asking me questions and my responding. Students are always surprised that I live in David and not in Boquete.
One of the young ladies in the class was a teacher. There were two students that were students of medicine in UNACHI. They were in their second year of a six year program.
The senior student was Dr. Roldolfo Mendez (doctor of Orthopedics) . He said it was becoming more important for the doctors to speak English, and it is wise for those of us that move to Panama to speak Spanish. He said there was recently a English speaking patient in the regional hospital and her only speaking English made it very difficult.
We had a good exchange and I definitely enjoyed my visit. I hope they enjoyed it as much as I did.
This first photo contains the two medical students, Darío and Dr Mendez.

This is the rest of the class. Three college students and the 12 year old with the New York Yankee hat. I asked if he liked the Yankees. He said no. He just likes black hats.

For some of us, the Yankees are the “black hats”…see old cowboy movies
Hi Mike,
I was a Yankee fan back in the time of Mantle, Maris, Whitey Ford, etc.
Today, I could care less about all of the professional teams. Too much money and too many problems.
I would hope that all people that move to panama would learn to speak Spanish. When I lived in Germany I learned German and that was a while ago. Yes I still remember it. And when my wife and I relocate to panama we will both learn Spanish. And what better way to lear then to speak with the people who live there. I myself would like to be in the classes . Corbin
Hi Corbin. Thanks for the comment. I am sure there will be a place waiting for you.
