Time Is Short, But…
Dec 18th, 2007 by Don Ray
I just received this email, and time is short, but maybe someone would be willing to grab the horns of this opportunity and follow through with the suggestion in this email.
I will be happy to support the effort by promoting it (and I am sure other blogs in the area might as well), but I need someone else to be the owner of the project. I will also contribute $400 towards the necessary quantity (100). I am sure we have enough people to handle the obligation. Who is willing to grab this and run with it?
Here is the email:
Don Ray,
Recently 60 Minutes did a program about the one laptop per child. The info about the laptops is at http://laptop.org. They have a program good until the end of this month where one can buy 2 for a total of $399. One to have for a child of your choosing and one to be donated to a child somewhere in the world. The website for that program is at http://www.laptopgiving.org.
I just thought some here might want to get together and a supply a school with these. Although that might be a tall order since there is a min. of 100 per order. Appears these laptop will cost about $188. I would be willing to donated $100 of the $399 just to see the computer. Or give it to Lilia Lau so she could show it to the Rotary. Or maybe give it to the Minister of Education for Chiriquí so he would know about it.
Cheers,
John Clement

Don Ray,
The part that expires on December 31 is the “Buy One, Give One” program, where you buy two for $400.00 and one gets sent to a foreign country, the other to you or someone you designate. No coordination required for this one.
I will contact the OLPC organization and see if it is possible to have the laptops sent to a private organization for distribution and post their answer here and on my website. I would NOT be in favor of contributing if the laptops are to be sent to the government for distribution. It’s all too easy to imagine them being handed out to political supporters or given to anyone but the children who most need them.

Hi Henry. Thanks the comment. I also would not want it to go to the government. I would rather just buy one and give it ti the child I wanted rather than that.
