Great story, Don., that one did bring tears to my eyes! We also, had that type of wall phone in Manitoba, Canada; and used the operator for information! Keep it up! Delmar.

Before dial phones, the telephone was the conduit for the equivalent to soap operas today. Back then there was the party line and everyone knew what was going on in everyone else’s lives.

I’m a sucker for them, too. My “Information Please” operator was named Ethel and I think she knew every kid in town. Our number was 386-J. A very important part of America died when the phone company switched to dial phones.

Forgot to mention, the story was written by Paul Villiard, about 1905- 1970’s. The story also appeared unedited in his book “Growing Pains; The Autobiography of a Young Boy”.
