Movie Alert
Oct 28th, 2007 by Don Ray
I received and email about a movie, that is coming this Christmas season.
The movie is called “The Golden Compass” and stars Nicole Kidman and other well known actors. The movie is derived from a book series that is anti-religious in nature. If you watch the trailer, it seems innocuous enough.
I am posting this, not to try to tell anyone, what they should or should not believe, or for that matter, what movies to see or not to see. However, with this movie coming out, when it is, and it being aimed at the younger generation, I thought you may want to know its foundations before you take your children or grand children to see it. Whether, it would or would not have a negative effect on anyone, I do not know.
For a broader understanding of this movie and the author behind it, check out the following link. With more information, you can make your own decisions. At least you will have made a conscious decision.

Thanks for the information Don!
Read and sent the link to my daughter and she will distribute it in Hawaii for sure. We need God more now than ever!
Hi Scott. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.
The problem with the comments about Pullman at the Snopes site is that they all come from people who hate Pullman because he is an athiest. I had never heard of him; so, I went to google. The impression you get there is considerably different from the limited comments at the Snopes site. In any case, an interesting item on Don Ray’s always entertaining blog.
Hi Tom. Thanks for leaving a comment. I would almost like to watch it to form my own opinion. However, since it is targeted toward the younger generation, it will most likely be in Spanish and it wears me out to have to concentrate that hard in a movie.
MSN has more info about this movie. You can watch a trailer and read Critics’ Reviews. Go to the Search Box at http://movies.msn.com
Hi John. Thanks for adding your comment. I wrote this post not to persuade anyone one way or the other. But this is obviously going to be a controversial film and I decide it was worth providing an alert.
Yes, I understand your position. I have another movie database internet resource which I use. It is http://www.imdb.com. They gave a full synopsis of this movie.
I have a movie package on Direct TV. I enjoy the old black and white movies of the 30s and 40s and some the the classics of the 50s. I like to read about the movies..where they were filmed..the year they were filmed…about the actors….trivia…etc.
Do the movies on DirecTV provide a lot in English? I haven’t seen DirecTV in 4 years and am curious if it is worth the money.
Sometimes I think yes and other times no. Mine cost $37.25. I don’t recall exactly but the installment was in the $80-$100 range. I took a package which has 2 Movie City channels and 3 classic. These are in English. There is also a package which has 6 HBO channels and 4 Cinemax. That package is about the same as mine. I wanted the classic to see some of the old black and whites. Last year the baseball package was just $50 for the whole season. They also have a NFL package which I did not get this year because they cut back the coverage in half and doubled the price. I also get BBC but it tends to be like CNN…it repeats, repeats the same stuff all day. But sometimes BBC will spend a whole hour on a coverage the American channels do not cover. Something from Africa or Asia.
I also get Astrovision. CBS, channel 53, is off today which is normal for the end/beginning of the month. I like Channel 23 when they show scenes of Chiriqui. The hip hop music they carry on 23 I can do without.
That is the best answer I can give.
I know what you mean about the classics. I used to like Boston Blackie, the Thin Man, and others.
Last night I went to the movie house a/k/a picture show at Gran National and saw Michael Clayton, starring George Clooney and Sydney Pollack. Good plot. It was similar to a John Grisham novel.
The retiree admission price is just $1.35. Next time I will take a light sweater. The show I went to started at 7 PM.
That is on my list to watch. I understand that it is a good movie.
