David Yahoo Gringo Meeting at Antojitos - Today
Sep 13th, 2007 by Don Ray
The David Gringo Meeting will be today at 2:00 at Antojitos. It is interesting to me that the last meeting I went to there was one year ago tomorrow. I see that on that post, a year ago, that a person wrote and asked how to find one of the meetings.
I foolishly said to look at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Gringos_in_David_Panama/.
I say foolishly because the reminders that the site puts out say, “will be posted on the board”. Well here is a nudge to the moderators of the David Yahoo Gringo Site. If you really want anyone to show up at these meetings, then it would be of great assistance if you would take the trouble to update the reminder with the meeting location, including directions of how to get there.
Now if the intent is to keep people confused and possibly prevent too many people from showing up, then I stand corrected and you are doing exactly as you should. I will be at the meeting today, so I can take some flack for this nudge.
Oh yes, based on my post of a year ago, I think Antojitos is across from the Mitsubishi dealer.

Hi Don Ray,
It is very interesting to see how many Americans live in Panamá now, specially in Chiriqui, I’m Panamanian, well now a US citizen, my family is from Chiriqui, but I reside in Ohio, since my husband went to Panamá, he wants to move there, which it makes me very happy, but he is worry about getting a job, I’m not sure about that either, he is from Dover, Ohio and besides Panamá, he has never been in another country or State for that matter. Can you give us in idea…. if you can. I know it sounds weird, because you don’t know us, but I don’t know who to ask, and I always read your blog, but never say anything. Thanks
Hi Chris & Miriieth,
This is an area that I probably can’t help much. As if I ever provide any help for others.
Work for US Citizens is Panama is difficult. You can’t take any job that causes a Panamanian to not have a job. You can create jobs by forming a company and employing Panamanians, but that isn’t all that easy either.
If any reader has an idea to help, I am sure they will reply. I wish you luck.
The biggest issue with working as an employee in a country like Panama is probably that the salary is way different than what people are used to in Europe or the US. Without going into the numbers let me just say that in Panama City you can find a lot of taxi drivers who have a day job at some company or government office and at night try to augment their income by driving a taxi. Just last night I had a nice conversation with one of those. So you might figure it’s not that easy to make ends meet …
Hi Stephen. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I agree. If you do qualify for a job that would displace a Panamanian, then it might be a rude awakening to see what pay was provided for that work.
hi don…
thanks for taking the mystery out of the location for the gringo gathering, saved me hiring a cab to follow.
norm :))~
Hi Norm. Glad it helped.
Hi everybody, I just want to clarified something, Don Ray, as a Panamanian myself, I wouldn’t be displacing anybody… And I know how things are in Panama, how much people make and so on, all my family lives in David and Panama city, I guess I didn’t ask the question properly, but is OK, thanks anyway
Hi Mirleth. I thought your original question was related to your husband getting a job in Panama. That was focus I used when I responded. I realize that you, as a Panamanian, can work in any job or profession that you desire.
