Money Doesn’t Buy Happiness

I know you have heard this as many times as I have. I think I heard it the first time from my mom. After my dad died we struggled a lot, but I never remember being unhappy for the lack of money. When my mom would tell me that, I don’t know if she told me that to teach me something or to convince herself.

What ever the reason, her lesson stuck and I have always enjoyed life independent of how much money I had. I have never required my friendships to based on money or status. I guess that comes from being brought up in a country setting for the first 12 years of my life. Maybe that is why I enjoy living in David, Chiriquí. Life is simple and it is possible to have fun without dropping a bundle of money.

I guess this thought, about money, started running through my mind this morning after making my morning trip through the news in the US. Michael Vick is a good example. Here is just the latest example of a professional athlete who had the world by the tail and then, because of his feeling of being above the law with all his money, found out that the tail he was holding was that of a dog he had just put to death.

Then there are the movie celebrities. Owen Wilson was in today’s headlines being admitted into into the hospital for an apparent suicide. It seems that on a daily basis you can read of another that had been on a drug or alcohol binge and has put their career in jeopardy.

For some money is a means of having power and it is power that drives them. Pick any of the world leaders and you can have a field day find fault with their abuse of money and power. The same thing can be said for many of the CEOs of corporations around the world. Look at how many cook the books so they can impress their friends (are they really friends) with their status in society.

Like Roger Miller used to sing, “Ya can’t roller skate in a buffalo herd, but you can be happy if you’ve a mind to”. It doesn’t require money, it just requires setting your mind to being happy. Tell yourself what a great day it is today. Take a deep breath of that fresh air and drink in the sunshine. Smile at your neighbor and wish them a good day. Life is good and it doesn’t require money, it just requires the right attitude.
