Repair or Replace
Aug 10th, 2007 by Don Ray
With my Linux PC being down, I am gathering some pricing information. With that information, I can make an intelligent decision on repairing or replacing once I have the repair price from Micro Technology.
It reminded me that people moving to Panama may not be aware that Dell has a Panama website and before buying, it is always good to see if they have any promotions going on.
PriceSmart usually has a couple Dell configurations and sometimes the Dell website promotions beat the current price and configurations in PriceSmart.
You can also check the websites for AudioFoto, PanaFoto, and Multimax in Panama City. If you are an Apple advocate, then check the Mac Store in Panama City. The Dell site may be read in English or Spanish, while the last four are only in Spanish.
Before plopping down a bundle at PriceSmart or having one of the local Panama stores build you a configuration, it is always good to have valid Panama pricing benchmarks to assist you.
In David, there are several stores that will build a PC for you. If you are going to buy one in this manner, I would suggest you get a detailed list of the components that they are using. If the store doesn’t want to identify the exact components that will put in your PC, you should not buy from them.
If you don’t know if the manufactures and components that they are using are recognized for quality, ask someone. I use three websites (AnandTech, ExtremeTech, and Tom’s Hardware), if I am researching PC components. These three sites will usually tell me the motherboards, disk drives, etc to consider. Then I check some of the better Internet sites to gather prices. Increase the prices on the Internet by about 30% for Panama.
Once I am armed with information, then I don’t worry about being taken. Well, you can see what’s on my mind today. Now go out and have some fun.

Also, if you’re going to build a Linux machine, check sites such as http://www.linuxcompatible.org/compatlist3.html to confirm that the proposed hardware is known to work in Linux. A Google search for linux machine builders may also lead to information on motherboards, etc.
That is a good point.
Just saying hello to you with your Linux and other technology
I have just got to know, that my eye is well after 5 weeks uncertainty, will I see by it or not. And I see as well as before this nasty “ablatio retinae”, after two hours surgery and all kinds of tricks after that and no promises at all, only “we can see after 4-5 weeks “!!
So, problems with Linux is one thing and the problem with an eye another
Nice days to you and Lilliam!
Hi Leena. Glad to hear that your surgery went well. You are correct. Problems with PC hardware is nothing to maintaining the body’s hardware.
I vist your site often to see what new photos you have posted.
Leena,
No matter who your doctor is, do NOT accept any more invasive surgery, including injections to the eye without a second opinion. I had surgery in May last year to correct a detached retinue. In July, with my vision improving every day, the doctor decided to speed things up with an injection directly into the eye. I trusted him and agreed. The eye became infected, and I later had surgery to correct some damage from the first surgery. A third surgery (8 hours, different doctor) was necessary to repair the damage done by the first surgeon. I’ve suffered over a year of daily pain and today am completely blind in the left eye and the eye is getting smaller and is probably going to die. Don’t let that happen to you.
Henry
Damn Henry, I am really sorry to hear that. I knew you had surgery on your eye and had hoped it was doiing fine.
Back on topic, Ubuntu has a hardware database.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupport
Most HP printers will work, and locally you can get Canon’s LiDE scanners for about $55.00. They work out of the box. Most Winmodems will not work. I don’t know about Clueless and Witless’ Freedom ADSL USB crapmodems, but a friend who had one could not get it to work with Ubuntu 6.1.
Henry,
Sorry to hear about your eye.
Thanks for the link. I was sure there was an Ubuntu database, but I couldn’t find it when I was dashing off the post this morning.
Oh, Henry, what terrible thing to hear! I have been very lucky, when
all went well - at least up to here! I really sympathize you.
