Playing With Zoom
Aug 1st, 2007 by Don Ray
On my return from the US, I spent less than a full day in Panama City before returning to David. On the morning of my flight, I took a few photos to test the zoom on the new Olympus SP550UZ. This camera has many features that I need to use and get accustomed to using. As I learn more, I should be able to get some good photos. Currently, I have taken some good and some not so good and some very bad.
One of the things I noticed this morning, while reviewing these photos, is that I set the time incorrectly in Austin. I had set PM, when it should have been AM, and all of the photos that I have taken have a recorded time 12 hours behind the actual time. I have now set the correct time.
Here are the photos I took the morning I left Panama City. As you will see in the photos, it was a hazy morning. My reason for taking these photos was because of all the straight lines which I thought would help test the camera’s resolution.
In this first photo, take note of two things. First, look at the large sign structure to the right. Second, look at the new building being built with the crane in the middle of this photo.

This is a crop from the sign structure. I think the detail and straight lines look all right.
In this photo, I zoomed in on the building with the crane.

In this photo, I cropped a small area in the previous photo.

In the following photo, notice the yellow building in the center of the photo.

Here I have zoomed in on the same building.

And here is a crop from the previous photo.

All of these photos were taken without a tripod and subject to my shaky hands. I wish it had been a brighter day and I think it would have set a slightly faster speed, but all in all they didn’t come out too bad.
