Interesting Day

Well today has been partly good and partly frustrating. As you remember, Natalie is studying to be able to pass the TOEFL exam. She now has access to another source of English practice via the Internet. Since she has that new way to practice, I decided to hook up a satellite Internet connection so she could access the Internet.
Now that I have UBUNTU running, I thought I would just use my second PC (running XP) and all I needed was a monitor, keyboard and a mouse. I had an extra Ethernet cable so running it to another location was no problem.
I thought the whole process would take about an hour. I was able to pick up a n inexpensive monitor, a cheap mouse, keyboard and computer desk at INFOX. Now the fun begins.
When I hooked up the XP PC, it didn’t want to recognize the cheap KB and mouse. No problem, I decided just to connect my Logitec mouse and KB for the time being. Now for the Internet connection. Sure enough when I hooked up the cable, which had been made by Oteima, I found that I didn’t have Internet.
Luckily I have an Ethernet cable tester and sure enough, the cable had a bad connector. Every cable that I have ever had Oteima make has been bad. So I was off to the local Chinese electronics store to buy some Ethernet connectors so I could re-manufacture my own cable. I bought 4 RJ-45 connectors. I wasn’t about to go back if I made a mistake. Four connectors cost me $2.00. Don’t know what those connectors cost anymore in the US.
Twenty minutes later I had the new connector wired and the Internet now is running and Natalie has her own private workstation to complete this additional training. I would have said that this was a total success if this cheap KB and mouse would have worked on the XP PC. Linux has no problem using it. Given some time, maybe I will solve the problem on XP, but for now, I am just going to relax a bit before I take on that problem.

Yoohoo! Nice to see that Linux didn’t need any additional drivers ;-).
Hi Tuxi - Yes that was the only thing that went completely right.
Now that you’ve got a Winders box on your intranet, Firestarter will come in handy.

My winders box is pretty well protected. It has its own firewall and anti-virus and anti-spy etc. etc.
