While part of San Jose can be charming, I suspect that you will return to Panama with a new appreciation for Panama! Costa Rica is beautiful as a whole, but San Jose is in need of a dusting and cleaning. Take care…really!

My husband and I are planning on retiring next year and we have been to Panama many times this year and we loved it. We are planning on retiring in Panama and our friends are telling us that Costa Rica is better for the retiree. When my husband and I went to Costa Rica this year we stayed in San Jose and two people in our group were mugged What is your opinion. I have been reading your site for the past year and you make Panama sound like a dream world. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK

Caryl - My experience from talking to over 20 retirees that decided to move from Costa Rica says that for relaxed retirement, there is no comparison. Panama has Costa Rica beat. It is cheaper and you can’t beat not having to translate money into colones. At one time Costa Rica was the place to go. I don’t think that is true today.
