Let’s Have A Baseball Parade
May 6th, 2007 by Don Ray
On my way to the airport this morning, I had to take a detour because there was a baseball parade going on. I stopped and took a couple photos. I was on a mission so I didn’t have time to take photos of the whole parade.
I did get the beginning of the parade.

This says something to the effect that Chiriquí welcomes the 23rd Elementary Championship teams of Panama.

Here was a team from Bocas del Toro.

Here is a team from Cocle.

Do you think baseball is important in Panama?

That’s it. Sorry I had such a short time. There is always a reason to have another parade. I was lucky to accidentally see this one.

It is nice to think that watching a baseball game is still a good way to spend a couple of hours. We’ve really gotten so hyped by the entertainment industry in the U.S. (and probably in most of the world)–including pro sports–that we forget to just sit back and watch a game for what it is: a game. I don’t even know if my little city here in the states has a baseball team of some ilk or where it might play if it does exist. I know that the David team is closely watched by aficianados there, but I don’t know about the “minor” leagues–like the school teams you’re showing here: Do folks turn out to watch their games, do you think? In a lot of ways it’s more enjoyable to watch the less than perfect athletes perform. It adds a measure of excitement wondering if the third baseman can handle a groundball and, if he/she can, will the ball make it to first base.
Thanks for the thought, Don Ray.
Hi Frank. The younger players get a good turnout also. One day when I walked over to the stadium they had several age levels working out and each were really being put through the drills. I think in Chiriqui baseball is even more popular than soccer.
