I Think I have Fallen For Another
Apr 25th, 2007 by Don Ray
Yes, I think my heart has been captured once more. After a previous love broke my heart, I set out with the thought of once more filling the void that had been created. Changes seem to be harder the older you get and yet we must all continue to change for not changing can only be equated to dieing.
This new love certainly is not the one I had expected. I found enough flaws in the potential relationship, that I had almost discounted it. However the more I have let my mind evaluate all the plusses and minuses, I have decided that this is the one for me. I think the deciding factor was the feeling I had when I had this beauty in my hands. When we were together, I felt new potential. Many things that had seemed far off were now able to come into focus.
One thing that had concerned me was that I thought my new love’s memory was a little slow. Then after more thought, I realized that my memory is not what it used to be either. Maybe memory is overrated. I mean as long as the important things can be retrieved, then that is all that really counts. Besides, everything is slower in Panama.
When I looked at things from a macro viewpoint, I realized that more things really came into focus. Sometimes only after closer inspection, do the real qualities and hidden beauties reveal themselves. I think it may take a good bit of time for me to appreciate what I have found and maybe even longer to adapt to all the new things I will have to learn for this relationship to really work.
Now I am not entering into this without any trepidation. There have been several that have provided warnings and even some that have said that I would be disappointed. I guess I will have to see how things develop. I have to admit that everything hasn’t been exposed to me, but I have high hopes for a longer relationship than my previous one.
I have always been a little shaky when it comes to things like this, but for some reason I feel confident that all will stabilize. I have to confess I was also bowled over by her body. I mean it is so streamlined and all the knobs and gismos are right where you would want them. To this point, I have just barely gotten to touch them, but I look forward to gaining more “hands on” experience, if you know what I mean. I didn’t think I could get so aroused by one of the newer models, but I have been smitten.
Now the deal hasn’t been actually consummated yet. She is currently in Panama City and I will probably have to go there to retrieve her. I hope she isn’t gone before I return. While there is still some opportunity for this to all fall through, if you promise to keep this between you and me, I will give you a glimpse of this beauty. Remember that this is still only a dream on my part.

dear don ray,
you and frank!
i guess you and frank are good guys and deserve a new toy !
congrats. ellen
Of course we do. And the more knobs and gismos the better.
CUTE!! No one will be able to resist the come on.
I wrote a long email to you over a week ago that got lost in the server recommending a very similar camera to you. I would still suggest that you check out the Panasonic Lunix series, with the LEICA LENS’. There are several models. Leica lenses practically see in the dark.
I will be in Panama again, flying to David on the 10th and driving to Boquete. I will take advantage of many of your recommendation on this trip. I will probably stay at the Boquete Country Inn, and would love to treat you/and or any of your friends in the area to a drink at either (or both) the Bistro or the Panamonte Inn. If you haven’t ween the “firelighting ceremony” you really should.
In the meantime, enjoy your new knobs, wherever they are.

Hi Shrader. I have looked at the new Panasonic cameras, but have never been able to make myself want one. These things always wind up being a personal thing and what one likes another may hate. This camera is similar in size to the Canon S2 that I had that broke. Time will tell.
Enjoy your up coming trip.
I had an Olympus E-10. Very good DSLR. A lot of things just depend on your shooting style. I have to say, on occassion slow memory meant missing a shot because the buffer was filled and I had to wait for everything to write before I could take another. I liked the flexibility of all the manual controls.
On the other hand I also enjoyed a Sony P-200 point & shoot style. It took fabulous pictures, although my control was much more limited. The compact form factor also was a welcome change when traveling or hiking. Sometimes it’s nice to be able to slip a camera in a pocket and not draw much attention. With a big DSLR everybodies notices & looks.
Hope your new camera works out well. I have found the site dpreview.com to offer very thorough and informative reviews and the ability to compare features of various brands & models side by side.
Hi JP. Yes, I went over all the better known review sites. I actually found a couple reviews in German and one in French that actually more in tune with my needs.
I have a smaller camera that comes closer to pocket size. One can never have too many cameras. I am sure that must be a rule.
Dear Don,
Congratulations on your lovely new partner. Talk about eye candy……Can’t wait to see the beautiful images the two of you make together!!!! Isn’t spring time great!
Reed
Thanks Reed. Yes. I think we were made for each other.
Another fickle male! And I thought that only Canons tickled your fancy.
We recently retired our Canon PowerShot A60 after multiple system failures. We knew when we bought it back in 2003 on a trip to Colombia that it wasn’t top of the line - not the fastest, not the most ‘pixel-ated’ - but it suited our requirements perfectly. It turned out to be a good traveller and the images it produced were great.
The recently purchased successor is a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ3 and we’re still learning about all of this camera’s functions. For me, the lack of a conventional view finder is the biggest drawback for this camera - taking photos in bright light situations using only the LCD monitor usually results in out of frame shots. Hopefully, that’s just our lack of experience with the camera (and poor eyesight) and not a fatal flaw. Best wishes for a long and happy relationship.
At the moment it is still a long distance relationship. The union has not occurred yet.
I agree that the viewfinder can be almost a necessity when you are taking photos on a sunny day. It is sort of guess and hope.
Hi Don,
It never ceases to amaze me which of your Posts get the most response. Who knew that Shutterbugs were so passionate!
Don Ray,
At the end of the day, you’re the only one you have to please. I hope this one fills the bill. We all enjoy your pictorial essays. (I was sure the headline was about the camera, but I *had* to read it to find out — good hook.)
Hello Don,
You might want to check out the in depth review at http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/olympussp550uz/.

Hi Dan. I never know what will and won’t get comments either. I have quit trying to figure it out.
Tuxi - You are right about that. I have tried to read and understand all the downsides, but in the end sometimes the best evaluated product isn’t what I want to buy.
Hi Jack. I have read all the reviews. I even dug out several written in German and some in French so this purchase won’t have been made without research. After a certain point you have to say to yourself what is the most important thing to you and go with it. I bought the Canon S2 after a tremendous amount of research too and that turned out to be a bad buy. Time will tell, but my mind is made up.
Gees, and here I was about to tell you to find a woman you don’t like, and buy here a house instead!
That would have been good advice had I been going in that direction.
Don, Very funny and it captured me. I have not been to see you in awhile. Distractions are many for me these last few months. It sounds like you are still doing well. I will try to get back sooner. Dick
Dick - thanks for stopping in. Sorry for the practical joke, but I have to have some fun once in a while.
