Retire in Panama Yahoo Group
Apr 4th, 2007 by Don Ray
In my daily Internet travels, I visit several of the Yahoo groups that are related to Panama. The intent of most of these groups is to provide information to other people that may have a desire or interest or just a curiosity of what living in Panama is like.
In each of these groups, you can usually find a kernel of information you might be interested in. However, it is easy for these groups, over time, to be dominated by a small number of individuals that create as much disruption as they create valid information.
One exception is the Retire in Panama Yahoo group. While the moderation is flexible, it has been able to maintain the proper balance of information while still allowing the necessary social interaction for older members. This is a very civil and responsible group.
If you have tried other Yahoo groups and become discouraged because of the sarcasm and sometimes mean spirited interaction, and you still have honest questions about Panama that you would like to ask then give Retire in Panama a try.

When I used to go to Sint Maarten a lot, there were a number of groups concerned with issues & vacationing on this island. I found that the Yahoo group were consistently meaner and went off topic consistently. However, the non-Yahoo groups seemed to be much more on-topic and pretty civil. After signing up for a number of Yahoo groups (including one on Nicaragua) I have found that these groups are pretty much the same in demeanor. Too much garbage for too little real information. So I end up reading the blogs (such as yours). However, I will give Retire in Panama a try. BTW, the pana_construction group is a pretty good one, but is not a general interest one as it focuses on building in Panama.
Hi Rob. I think you are right about Yahoo groups in general. Since a lot of people windup trying some of the groups and getting ridiculed with their questions, i thought I would offer up one I think does a pretty good job.

Has an interesting article features an interesting article from the NY Times financial section about retiring or investing in Panama. Anyone ever do an investment tour there?
Hi Julene, Thanks for sharing the article.
I have seen many investment tours for Panama advertised. Personally, I don’t like most of these types of tours because they tend to be backed by investment groups that feed off gullible people. I think it is better to come, visit, try living here, before thinking about investing.
Thanks. I’m going to give this one a try. High tailed it out of Americans in Panama, after monitoring it for a week. Looking for a decent forum for dialogue and questions about living in Panama, hopefully strong on pros and cons of various areas, how to navigate various situations, i.e. legal, mail, services, and all that. And hopefully minimal on rants, bigotry, and gun tottin’ raves.
