Parque Cervantes Update March 2007
Mar 14th, 2007 by Don Ray
On my last visit to look at the progress of Parque Cervantes, I was told the target date was March 19th in time for the David Fair. With tomorrow being the opening day for the fair, I thought it would be a good time to take another look.
The new target date is the middle of May. The Vice-Alcalde for David was at the site this morning and he gave me another tour of the park.

They are working on the final piece of the park and that is the walking area. Here is the area where the outdoor stage is located. They are dropping the rock to create walking area’s base.

This photo is taken facing the central fountain.

Here you can see the concrete walk and the area to be filled. When this is finished the Vice-Alcalde said the surface area would be gray and red bricks. This park is really going to be beautiful.

The Vice-Alcalde also pointed out how the park has been designed with ramps for the handicapped. This is the only area I can think of that has taken that into consideration. Feel free to leave a comment and tell me the areas I have missed that have also been designed for the handicapped. Now how they ever get to the park is an entirely different issue.
We sat and talked a bit and I hadn’t noticed what an improvement the seating is. For a concrete seat and backrest, it has just the right inclination and is very comfortable. This will be a good place to take a book and read when the park opens.
Another interesting thing that I learned is that the park is supposed to have a web cam so you can see what’s happening in the park over the Internet. Hmmm. If it happens, I’ll add the URL to the link section with the other Panama webcams.

This is taken from the other end of the ramp looking back toward the fountain.

The Vice-Alcalde said when the park opens there will be a huge Opening Inauguration for the park and President Torrijos will be here. I hope the next set of photos I take will be at that time.

Don Ray, because I enjoy resting as much as I do, these are among my favorite posts. Thanks for the update.
(El Presidente Torrijos–I’m impressed!)
Yes, I am excited. Wonder if I can get his photograph!
Hi Don,
Hopefully when I come to David in July I will be able to visit this new Park. I will look forward to that.
Pearl - I think you have a reasonable chance that it will be open.
Don:
Thanks for all the updates! When I lived there before I longed for a nice park and now my wishes have finally come true! Can’t wait to see the finished product.
Shawna
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment Shawna. There is no doubt that this is going to be a beautiful park.
Don,
For the newbies (and those who may be too timid to step forward and ask) perhaps it would be useful to locate Parque Cervantes in David so that the reader will know where it is.
I know when I first stumbled across it, I was driving in a vehicle and all I could see was a good sized square surrounded by high metal panels that completely obscured the view to the inside, which in turn was surrounded by a confusing cacophony of trucks, buses and crowds of pedestrians, encircled about by a kaleidescope of store fronts.
There’s a park around here? Nah…..
Thanks Don Ray, and thanks Rich Young for your wonderful photos of the Volcan area that I have been enjoying for some time now.
Rich - I guess I do assume too much. From the InterAmerican HWY, go down Obaldia (The street by Super Baru and Romeros). Take Obaldia until you have to go right. When you get to the church, look left.
Hi Gordo. Glad you enjoyed the photos.
