Sunday Trip To Volcan
Feb 18th, 2007 by Don Ray
Sunday again and I needed to get out. After only five seconds I ruled out Boquete. There is no way I wanted to fight the traffic going to Dolega. Volcan seemed like a good idea, so off we went. We got off a little late and arrived in Volcan about 2:30 PM and well past my lunchtime.
I stopped at a place I am sure I have eaten at before, but today was my last meal there. All three off us ordered trout. It came with a SMALL salad and French-fries. The trout was small and mine was pretty tasteless. I was marginally disappointed with the meal until I got the bill. It was $21. None of these plates were worth over $3.50 and I personally thought $7.00 was a rip-off. If you are heading to Volcan and want a good meal at a reasonable price, the photo below is where you should not stop.

We drove to Cerro Punta and into the town of Guadalupe. I wanted something sweet to improve my disposition and give me something pleasing to eat today. I thought of strawberries and cream. Many little places have them, but there is this one little place just as you turn left at the Guadalupe “T” intersection that really does a good job. This cost me $1.25 was worth every penny.

Next door I bought a loaf of strawberry bread and one of banana bread.

I kept watching this fellow cooking his sausage and Kabobs and kept wondering why I hadn’t eating lunch here. I really wanted to buy on, but my belt kept me from doing it.

Next we stopped at my friend Jerry’s house. The second we walked in the house there was a huge downpour of rain. Jerry said it was the first in weeks. You are welcome Jerry. I am glad I brought you rain.
Natalie wanted to take a look at the horses across the road and when the rain stopped we walked over. Unfortunately the horses didn’t realize that such a lovely young lady wanted to rub their noses and stayed off in the pasture.

Here is another view looking down the highway. It is hard to believe that five minutes before it was raining cats and dogs.

I had a good visit with Jerry and then we headed back to David. We made one last stop at a roadside sandwich and bakery site I always like to stop at. They have some really good bread and several local cheeses that are hard to pass up.

Now with the car loaded with one weeks supply of snacks it was finally time to return to David. It was a great day. The drive was fun. The day was pretty (even including the rain). And best of all I didn’t get into the Dolega Carnival quagmire.

Don,
Not meaning to judge your sanity or anything, but you left David and traveled to 3,500 feet to get Trout?
I would think the beef and chicken would be better.
Hola Don,
It has been very windy in Boquete today - but hey it’s the windy season. The next time you are Volcan you might want to try the rotissire chicken place next to Romeros. It’s good and reasonable.
Hello Don,
I hope the owner of the first place is not very hot temper !!!
Nice to see your green photos, we have got more snow and a temperature was this morning - 7,6 Fahrenheit. now sun is warming at least our souls.
Have a good week!
Leena
wsdave - there is a very large trout farm in Bambito and typically you can get very good trout in that area.
Ron - I will put it on my list to try.
Leena - I an not influenced by hot tempers. Hot peppers maybe, but not hot tempers.
Don,
Thanks for the pictures of Cerro Punta - certainly one of the prettiest spots around (though a bit cool at times). Another restaurant for you to try in Volcan is the Acropolis (Greek), a bit past the center of town, on the road toward Rio Sereno. Not necessarily the cheapest spot in town but surely one of the best - George (the owner) is a wonderful host.
Hi Gordo. I think I saw the sign. I will try it out the next time I am up there.
