The BookMark Is For Sale

I received an email from Hal at the BookMark telling me that he is putting the BookMark on the market. He basically said he wanted to start using his hammock more and that the BookMark’s business had grown to the point he thought it needed younger management.

He said it had grown from being a $30 -$50 a day business to what he called a $300 – $400 a day monster.

He currently has a couple of interested parties, one of which is interested in a partnership with someone who would run the day to day management of the business.

Hal said his current inventory is approximately 20,000 books and that he has all the sales data since 2004, showing steady growth.

The BookMark has been written about in every Panama Guide book I have seen and has the largest selection of English books in Panama in my estimation.

If you have an interest in this business opportunity, contact Harold (Hal) De Mun. You can reach him at the following email address. dembook@yahoo.com. I hope that whoever picks up this business will continue what Hal created. He has kept me in reading material since I move to Panama.

Good luck Hal and I will miss seeing you on my trips up to Dolega to get more books.

  1. MY SON AND HIS WIFE ARE INTERESTED IN THE BOOK MARK MAYBE IN THE PARTNERSHIP WHERE THEY COULD BE THE DAY TO DAY MANAGEMENT. THEY WOULD WANT TO BE ABLE TO MAKE A LIVING AT IT. DOES THAT INCLUDE LIVING QUARTERS? AND DO YOU THINK YOU COULD FIND OUT WHAT KIND OF TERMS HAL WOULD TAKE.
I USE TO GO INTO THE BOOKMARK EVERY COUPLE OF WEEKS. ONE REASON WAS I KNEW HE WOULD GIVE ME A BAG OF AVOCADOS WHENEVER I WENT.
    THANKS A BUNCH

  2. This has nothing to do with the bookstore sorry but thru the comment button I somhow can not reach you. You’ll be surprised to hear that you have a fan of this site from The Netherlands. I’m a Dutch male thinking of retiring to Panama and this site has given me very much info and pleasure, thanks !

  3. It’s a lot of work. In the used book business if your grossing $400 a day your working your tail off buying and selling(you need to buy right which means knowledge of the subject) and with overhead costs and your time if you net 20% your doing very well.
Yes $80 a day in Panama is a good wage but you will be working long hours to get that in my opinion(cheap help won’t help here). Here’s the catch “if you really love books” then your fine and it will work for you coz it’s your passion if not it will be touch and go. Needless to say I had a book store once..

  4. I am told that retail businesses like bookstores CANNOT be run by non Panamanians legally.
Apparently, you can do it within a Panamanian corporation and draw income in the form of dividends only .
Can this be confirmed or infirmed ?

  5. yes i did but its my understanding that it is still for sale. How about just answering my question instead of questioning my question. I am familiar with the laws in panama and lack thereof as well, so is it incorporated or not

  6. How about you just contact the people that are responsible for the Bookmark? This is a blog and your sarcasm isn’t impressing me. I have no responsibility for the Bookmark. You will get no answer here.
