Life’s Potholes

If you haven’t heard from me and wonder where I’ve been,
I’ve probably found one of life’s potholes and maybe fallen in.
Life is sometimes like a Panamanian highway, littered with holes and bumps,
And if you do not watch your step, you’ll get your share of lumps.
Even when I’m careful and my eyes are on the road,
Someone else will swerve to miss a hole and off the road I’ll go.
Some call it being in a funk others getting in the dumps,
For me it just one of life’s potholes that’s giving me some thumps.
It seems like you could avoid them if you really stay aware,
But most of the potholes appear before I know they’re there.
Once you’re in a pothole, getting out is no small feat.
A helping hand from a friend is usually what I need.
I find the largest hole can be filled with a kind word or a friendly smile,
Making life’s highway smooth sailing, at least for another mile.
So I am sorry if I’m missing and have disappeared from the fold,
I am probably just in or patching another of life’s old potholes.

Very nice, Don Ray, and so true. A kind word can make such a difference.
I hope you enjoyed my blog as I enjoy yours.
Well it is hard not to smile back when someone smiles at me.
Thanks for the visit and I will keep checking in.
Keep smilin’ Don Ray. Your site offers an oasis of kindness in the often contentious blogosphere. Thanks.
An “Oasis of Kindness”. WOW. That may be one of the best comments I have ever received. I may just have to frame it.
Well said, Don Ray. Life does have its ups and downs and having friends helps bunches.
Thanks for dropping in Sieg. I am glad you enjoyed my effort.
Didn’t know about your poetic skills, Don. So, so true and well put. I always enjoy visiting your site. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Thanks again. If you want to read other efforts I have written in the Poem area, go to the archives and click on the Poem category.
Hello, Don!
Here to tell you I really enjoyed your poem, not only is it meaningful but I really like that it rhymes (I know this might sound silly but I rarely find contemporary poems that rhyme) or is it that I am just not reading enough poetry?
Hello Lotus,
Thanks for leaving a comment. Most of my poems rhyme. I only have one or two that don’t. It is usually more difficult to make it meaningful and rhyme at the same time.
