Musical Journeys
Aug 22nd, 2006 by Don Ray
Pandora Internet Radio has provided me so much enjoyment, I thought I would tell you, once again, how easy it is to listen to great music from the Internet and to be able to tailor it to your liking. If you click on the artist’s names below Pandora will play some of their selections or selections that are similar. If a selection plays that you don’t want to hear again, just give it thumbs down and it will never play again. If one you really like plays, give it thumbs up. This is how you tailor each station to your liking.
Some days I find myself taking musical journeys through my past based on the music I pull up. I will never forget my mom buying me my first record player. You could change the speed from 78 RPM, 45 RPM, or 33-1/3 RPM depending on the record you were playing. We were visiting my grandma in Oklahoma City and along with record player, she bought me three 78-RPM records. They were all by Burl Ives. I probably drove her crazy playing them over and over and over again.
When my dad died and Mom and I moved to Odessa I started listening to a local artist named Roy Orbison. Most will associate him with the title song from the movie Pretty Woman.
Another Texas artist, a little north of Odessa in Lubbock Texas, was Buddy Holly. I can almost picture me and a bunch of fellas cruising around the Odessa Drive in listening to Buddy Holly and the Crickets.
I graduated from high school and went to college during the age when folk music was king. The Chad Mitchell Trio had to be one of my favorites. This selection will allow you to hear them, the Kingston trio, Peter, Paul and Mary and others. Boy does that music bring back memories.
Somewhere down the road I found myself listening to The Carpenters. I always thought that Karen Carpenter had one of the best voices I ever listened to.
My daughter introduced me to Enya when I worked in the Washington D.C area. She is still one of my favorite Celtic artists.
Another genre that became my favorite and hasn’t been replaced was country and western. Each artist has a style that is unique and I have several artists I created Pandora stations for. Among them are Dolly Parton, Guy Clark, Don Williams, and one of the new American Idols, Carrie Underwood.
Sometimes I want a little bluegrass and that takes me to Alison Krauss.
Some days I am in the mood for some easy listening piano music and for that I have “I Surrender All”.
Living in Latin America certainly requires some Latin music, especially on the day the maid cleans house. She works faster to music. When she is here I play either La Familia Pena-Govea Radio or La Oreja de Van Gogh. I must admit I play La Oreja de Van Gogh even when I am here by myself.
I have other stations I have created, but if I can get you to try just one or two of the ones above, I think you will be hooked on Pandora. You can then create your own stations and like me you may find yourself taking a musical journey through your past. I hope it can bring you some pleasant memories like this music brings me.

Well this was a pleasant post. I tried all your songs out and mailed myself the addresses. I didn’t know about Pandora but will certainly try to get it. The music was great and the post was too.
Thanks for the comment Abe. I enjoy Pandora and while I was listening to it yesterday, I just started writing.
