A Time For Remembering
Aug 22nd, 2006 by Don Ray
I spent a little time over in Costa Rica Saturday and Sunday. While I was there I happened to see some kids playing and it dawned me that adults need to be more like children. It takes very little to make them happy.
Here are a couple of photos of some kids having the greatest time in a small outdoor children’s pool. If you click on the first of the two photos, you will see a short video I took after they had forgotten a camera was watching them. I had been watching them run on the road that you can see in the bottom part of the photo. This was a dirt street with lots of rocks. There is no way I could have walked on it barefooted and these kids were running like it was nothing at all. Ouch!

This next shot shows two little girls whose mother’s had dressed them up in cute clean outfits. When you add young kids and a mound of dirt the clean outfits disappear pretty quickly. Can’t you just see the devil in their eyes!

I had been invited to attend a family reunion in remembrance of Costa Rica’s Mother’s Day that had been the previous Tuesday. This family gathered to remember its mother, grandmother and great grand mother. Here is a photo of the Costa Rican family and one gringo prior to going to the cemetery.

Several members of the family gave a small oration of respect for their departed loved one at the cemetery. Except for the very young, there wasn’t a dry eye there. I was most touched to see such overflowing love and devotion this family had for the lady that had given them life.
Here is a photo of part of the cemetery. Contrary to what I am used to, all graves are above ground. I would imagine this is because of the enormous amount of rain that is in this part of the country.

It was about 7:00PM when I finally reached the Panama border to return. Here is a shot of the Panama/Costa Rica border from the Costa Rica side of Paso Canoas.

Going through immigration is always a challenge. Nothing is simple. There are always several people that want to assist you finding the correct counter for immigration in hopes that you will reward them with some change. On the Costa Rica side you have to fill out a form both entering and exiting Costa Rica. They will not have any pens for you to use. Like magic, there just happens to be a person there that is selling them.

Hola Don,
I’ve been enjoying your blog for several months now. My husband and I lived in Nicaragua and are now planning on our permanent retirement move to Panama, some place near David. It looks like the new immigration building is now open. The last time we traveled from Costa Rica to Pasa Canoas it was a nightmare. That border crossing is on the top of our worst border list. We had to weave our way through the maze of trucks, jump puddles of puke and spilled diesel fuel, and stand in long lines where people pushed in front of us constantly. Is it any better? I sure hope so!
Hi Debbie,
Thanks for the comment and it is better now. I didn’t see any puke this last trip.
