The Last Slice

Posted by Don Ray on May 27 2006 at 02:38 pm

This is the last slice of the cake I baked yesterday. It was a hit. I am surprised that there was a slice left for today.

This photo shows one of the reasons I like it. I think the marbling of colors makes it a little more interesting. As I said the cake is very easy because it is based on a regular yellow cake mix. The recipe follows:

  1. Hi Don:

That piece of cake looks so good, I can take a bite at my screen right now.

    Cheers,

    Omar.-

Don, You have too many talents. Summer has arrived here. 87 today. Good for my tomatoes. I need to send you a picture of this old Michigan farmers garden. I am on memory lane today and the Memorial Days that I knew as a child. They were big deals that honored not only our military but all deceased relatives. Kathleen and I were in PA this week planting flowers on her families graves. Hope this finds you with more good projects. Keep in touch – Dick

Too late, Omar. I disappeared shortly after the photo was taken.

Dick, I am not sure how much of a talent it requires to follow a simple recipe such as this one. I enjoy the nice comments as much as the cake.

  5. A delicious looking cake, YUM!

  6. Don Ray says:

Thanks for the comment. Yes, it is one of my favorites. I think I should call it “The never lasts long cake”.

    Thanks for dropping in.

    Don,
I somehow can’t see you in the kitchen!! Why is that?? Anyway the cake looked good. Here is another bery easy recipe if you like healthy muffins.
I see you like to start with mixes!!

    SPICE MUFFINS
    l spice cake mix
1 can pumpkin pie mix (30 oz. in a can)
1/2 C flax seed (I used Oklahoma Pecans)
    1/2 C. minced dried apricots
Mix together and bake 350 degrees until done. Makes a big batch with some for the freezer. I bake them in my new Mother’s day present, a silicone muffin pan. I love the silicone pans but they are hard to handle. Deb found one at Williams Senoma that has fixed the problem The silicone cups are fixed in a metal frame.
    Enjoy
I went to Tulsa yesterday and saw the Disney Production of the Lion King. It was really great and is being held over. The costumes were out of this world and it was well done. Do you get broadway productions in Panama???

I am not sure why you can’t picture me in la cocina. You should know tha men make the best cooks!

Broadwary productions in Panama – well not in David.

I will try the muffens just as soon as I find a can of pumpkin.

    Thanks for dropping in.

  9. Why you do not want to use fresh pumpkin??? :)

  10. Don Ray says:

No reason I guess other than being lazy. Want to help me chose a fresh one and show me how to prepare it?

  11. glenda says:

    Don,
If you want to use fresh pumpkin you can just make the filling as you would make a pumpkin pie. I actually just bought solid pack pumpkin made my own filling and went from there.

I will have to give it a try.

  13. Lindsey says:

my friend and i would like to make the kahlua cake but we want to make it for our spanish class. is it possible to make it without kahlua?

  14. Don Ray says:

If you leave out the Kahlua than you need to change the name to Sin Kahlua Kahlua cake.

  15. Lara says:

Lindsey: wonder if the Kahlua flavored syrups would work? You can find them on amazon.com or (if you live near one) a World Market. I don’t remember if the brand name for them is Torani or DaVinci, but it’s definitely one of those.

  16. Don Ray says:

Hi Lara. Thanks for stopping in and taking the time to leave a comment. I bet it would work just fine. Seeing this photo tells me it is about time to make another cake.
