Hail, Hail – I Don’t Miss The Hail
May 3rd, 2006 by Don Ray
Often people ask if there are things that I miss from the states. Well of course there are. Mostly I miss family. The Internet helps that problem, because I get new photos all the time and I see videos of the grandkids growing up and having fun. But that doesn’t replace holding them.
Yesterday I was reminded of one of the things that I don’t miss. HAIL! As I was chatting on one of the Internet messengers with my daughter, she told me that it started to hail. I asked her to take a photo so those in Panama can actually see hail. I don’t know how many times that I have had Panamanians ask me about snow. I bet they can’t really imagine a hailstorm.
Here is a photo of a hailstone with a quarter next to it for a size reference. From some of the hailstorms I have been in, this is pretty small, but it will still do some damage. I have seen hail as large as baseballs.

This photo shows hail falling.

Yes there are some things I miss, but one of them is not hail.

Growing up in tornado alley as we did, hail was indeed a common occurence. It’s been a while since I’ve seen hail, and like you I don’t mind missing it one bit.
And to think that this is moderate sized hail. I remember the damage it did to my last car. I sure don’t miss it.
