It looks like it is going to take too much effort to get a stable Linux sustem on the new motherboard and I think the old PC may work better. I had everything working, but it was still a little unstable. I think I liked KDE fine. I actually think I liked it better than the Gnome version. I don't know if it's my bias against KDE, but I found SuSE not to fill my bill (at least on my laptop). I would encourage you to try Ubuntu; they do have AMD64 versions.
