TaxCut Doesn’t Do States!
Feb 19th, 2006 by Don Ray
When I was in the US I picked up a copy of TaxCut and I made sure I got the version that also prepared state taxes. After I went through the federal portion, I was ready to take a cut at the state portion.
The first question that TaxCut asked was if I was a resident of the state. I clicked on “No”. It responded that TaxCut didn’t work for non-residents. It then told me to download the forms from the Internet. Now don’t you think that is something that should be identified on the box!
TaxCut will never get another dollar from me. I wonder if TurboTax does the same thing.

This may actually be a problem with the various states, and not Tax Cut or Turbo Tax.
I just checked Illinois (where I live). You must be a full year resident to web file in Illinois. Hmm. There are many restrictions for e-filing, including full year residency. I suspect your state is the same way.
But, that shouldn’t stop the software companies from letting you at least do the forms on their software and then mailing them. How odd that Tax Cut wouldn’t work just because of residency.
I still feel that it should have identified that it only worked for resident filing. It is misleading the way it was advertised.
Hey Don,
Love your blog… as for Tax Cut, just say you live in Washington (no state income tax), then when you print out the forms to file manually, just white out the address and add the correct one. Of course you can’t e-file… Its a scam to have to pay tax when you’re a non resident (although the ~75000 exemption helps).
I had this same problem when I lived in Estonia.
Keep up the amusing and informative posts!!
The problem is that you don’t use the same forms for a non-resident as you would for a resident. The state shouldn’t be that difficult to do. Thanks for dropping in.
I am done with Taxcut!! Their customer service ranks as the worst. I had used the program for years however last year I received a CD in the mail and ordered deluxe+state and then a second state program. During a move I lost the CD. When I called customer service they couldn’t find the order - it seems that there are 3 taxcut companies/departments. one for online, one for CD bought in the store and one for CD’s sent out and none of them can access the information from the ohter one. After hours on the phone I had to pay for everything again because of inaction on customer services part. They can’t find the confirmation codes given to me for the program and even faxing copies of their confirmation e-mail didn’t help.
I am sure that is very frustrating. I would think you should contact HR Block and complain too.
