El Rey Opens In David!
Feb 15th, 2006 by Don Ray
WOW! El Rey opened at 6:00 AM this morning and it is really setting a tough act to follow for all of the other supermarkets in David. In fact, there is nothing that really compares with what I saw this morning. Of course it is new. And with its newness it brings bright colors, wide aisles, large varieties of items, tremendous presentation of products, and high quality produce.
Upon entering and taking a few photos, I was politely told that photos were not allowed. I explained that the sole purpose was to show those interested in moving to the Chiriqui area the high quality supermarket that had opened today. After my purpose was understood, I was given permission to take the photos you see in this post.
The first photo is what you see when you enter El Rey. It is impressive. The first thing I noticed were the nice wide aisles. They are probably 50% wider than any other supermarket in David.

I thought the bread and pastry area were especially well done. I saw several items that I am going to have to try out.

Here is a sample of the vegetable area. High quality and well presented.

While I am a big seafood lover, I rarely buy it at the supermarket. That is probably going to change. Notice the lobster in the middle of the case.

The flower section had flowers that were fresh and ready to be purchased.

Yes, El Rey has opened. It is going to be easier to find a parking place in the other supermarkets in David. Those that were worrying about the competition now know that their fears were well founded.
Alex and Mellisa at INFOX should be happy to see El Rey open. I am sure that a lot of folks are going to need to upgrade their current refrigerator or buy a freezer to hold all the food they are going to be buying in El Rey.

Love it!! When will you have the homes to sell that we are interested in? We love Panama!!!
Sincerely
Geneva Robinson
Sorry, but I don’t sell houses. Where are you wanting to buy and what type of house are you interested in?
Looks great. I think you’re right, I should be able to buy just about anything I need in Panama, as far as cooking goes. We’ll be in Volcan for a month in October. Let me know if you get tired of your own cooking, and we’ll have you up for dinner. Of course expect to be quized about your experiences in Panama.
Volcan in October should be a great time of the year. What’s for dinner?
What do you like? Italian, Thai, Chinese or American. Just don’t ask for salmon…we have great salmon here in the Northwest, but I just don’t like it. We will be staying at Los Plumas, and will have a full kitchen. I look forward to doing lots of cooking with all the fresh produce available. Of course, you’ll also have to let us know what your drink of preference is.
Shoot, I am easy. I like anything from pheasant to calf fries.
it looks nice
Actually, I think it looks great.
It looks like the one in Coronado actually
I guess they all may be the same.
[...] Arrocha is one of the major stores in Panama. Whey they have such paranoia about photos of their store is beyond me. I think they should be proud to show it off, but they are not as wise as El Rey, Doit Center and AudioFoto. [...]
[...] I went to El Rey to pick up some gum and something to drink. As I walked down the isle, I noticed this old lady (a gringa) staring at me. I looked at her, spoke and kept walking to the front counter to get my gum. [...]
How’s the pricing at el rey as opposed to other smaller/independent markets/farmers?
It looks nice, but one wonders how much that shiny-ness adds to the cost of food…
I buy my vegetables and fruits etc at the Saturday Farmers Market. You can’t beat it. However I buy almost everything else at El Rey.

Love it! Supermercado el Rey rocks! Does anybody remember Las Amigas Del Pueblo? Are they still around? I have not been to Panama in 21 years.
Hi Bill. I am not familiar with Las Amigas del Pueblo. Is that a super market?
