More Turtle Hatchlings Tomorrow
Dec 1st, 2005 by Don Ray
Friday, Dec. 2, at 4:30 pm, there will be another turtle hatchling release out at Playa La Barqueta.
I think I will pass tomorrow. However, if you haven’t been and are in the area, I would recommend it as a not to be missed experience. Video on Sea Turtles.

wow! that’s great! I didnt know they were doing that in Panama
I think this has really been a personal mission of Maricial. However, now that he is having such good turnouts and has even gotten some media exposure, maybe some others will take up the effort as well.
While this effort is to be commended it’s too bad he doesn’t have the facilities to raise them to a little larger size before releasing them. At this size they are nothing but dinner for every critter that swims. 99% of them will never live to grow up. I was on Grand Caymon a few years back and they have a turtle hatchery there which also releases back into the wild, but everything is a minimum of a year old before release. They charge an entry fee to visit the turtle farm and it helps covers expenses. My 2 cents.

Actually your percentage is probably a little high. I have typically read that the rate of survival is about 1 in 1000, which would make it 1/10th of 1 percent or 99.9% death rate. http://www.cccturtle.org/behav.htm
