avast! Me buckos
Nov 9th, 2005 by Don Ray
Well, my antivirus testing and search continues. I have uninstalled avast! antivirus after it failed to detect a virus. I have some floppies that contain a known virus (make that 2 viruses now that AVG has completed its system scan). Typically when the floppy is put in the drive and the drive is accessed, the virus warning pops up. Except the warning didn’t popup with avast!. I thought maybe it reacted it I opened the folder that contained the virus, it would react. Nope! Nada. No indication from avast! that there was any danger.
Then my firewall software asked if I wanted to allow a program to change the registry. The program had a Spanish name. Obviously the virus was alive and well and getting ready to strike. I denied the change and deleted the virus file. Shortly thereafter, I uninstalled avast! and have put AVG plus firewall on to test for 30 days. AVG has recognized the virus in question before, but I have never tested AVG plus firewall. Also when AVG did its initial scan it has found another virus on the system. A vast me buckos, I have been given the black spot. My days are numbered.
I have completed my testing of the new Lavasoft firewall. I am not sure why, but I really didn’t like it. It gave a lot of warnings, but no information on which to base a decision of what to do. I feel that the free ZoneAlarm is better than Lavasoft’s firewall. So far, I have liked the Kerio Personal Firewall the best, but unfortunately, they have decided to drop the product. I would have bought it. Darn.
